SUMMARY:Beaufort’s Free Persons of Color through the Civil War and Reconstruction
DESCRIPTION:Join Reconstruction Era National Historical Park for a new summer lecture series. The third lecture in the series will be by Park Ranger Dr. Tedi Light: \nOf the estimated half million free people of color living in the United States\, nearly half of them resided in the South with large\, notable communities in cities like Charleston and New Orleans. While there were over 36\,000 enslaved persons in Beaufort county in the 1860 census\, there were also more than 800 freepeople. Park Ranger Dr. Tedi Light’s talk will trace the lives of that community through archival records that reveal the precarity of life on the fringes of a slave society and the opportunities seized during the Reconstruction Era.

SUMMARY:Listening Party
DESCRIPTION:One thing I’ve noticed while campaigning is that politicians spend a lot of time telling people what they’re going to do. But I don’t remember hearing many people stop and ask the community what it actually wants. \nSure\, I have ideas\, and I’m excited to share them. But what about yours? \nHow have we\, as a community\, created space for everyone to be heard? \nI think one of the biggest reasons people become disconnected from politics is because they stop believing their voice matters. If people don’t feel heard\, eventually they stop participating altogether. \nThat’s not the kind of community I want to help build. \nThis event isn’t about me giving another speech. It’s about giving you the microphone. \nWhether you have concerns\, ideas\, frustrations\, or a vision for Beaufort’s future\, I want to hear it. Throughout this campaign\, and if I’m fortunate enough to serve on City Council\, I want people to know their voice has a place at the table. \nMy goal has never been to tell Beaufort what it needs. \nMy goal is to listen\, help bring people together\, and be the hammer that helps build our vision for Beaufort. \nIt’s time for something different. \nFor the people that live here. 🇺🇸💙 \nP.S. \nLETS GOOO!!!!

SUMMARY:Beaufort Digital Corridor's 10th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Save the date. Beaufort Digital Corridor is turning 10. \nA decade ago\, a handful of people believed Beaufort could grow more than a tourism economy. What started as a public-private partnership between the City of Beaufort and a small group of local entrepreneurs\, modeled after the Charleston Digital Corridor up the coast\, became BASEcamp: a home base for founders\, freelancers\, and small tech companies right in downtown Beaufort. \nTen years\, hundreds of members\, and countless TECHconnect nights later\, BDC is still doing what it set out to do: building a place where Beaufort’s knowledge economy can take root and grow. \nThis year also marks a new chapter. This summer\, BDC welcomed new executive director AJ Jackson\, who’s stepping in to carry the mission forward into its next decade. \nWe’re celebrating both. Full event details coming soon\, but mark your calendar now. You won’t want to miss this one. \nDetails forthcoming. Follow this page for updates.

To donate\, you may visit the “Donate” page of our website\, or bring the donation with you to the tour and leave it with the Master Naturalist. Thank you for your support. \nScroll down to book. If you have any questions or concerns\, please email us at info@foprcw.org. \n***Due to recent improvements on Paris Avenue\, access to the Port Royal Cypress Wetlands amphitheater will be limited for pedestrians. Therefore\, for the foreseeable future\, we recommend that visitors to the Wetlands begin their tour at the half-mile loop\, starting from the covered pavilion on Richmond Avenue.
