SUMMARY:Carolina's Ring: Lynn Seldon in Conversation with John Warley
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 18th\, from 4-6pm\, we are excited to host Lynn Seldon in conversation with John Warley! \nMr. Seldon’s new novel\, Carolina’s Ring\, is the second in his trilogy that began with Virginia’s Ring nearly a decade ago. Reminiscent of Pat Conroy’s Lords of Discipline\, Virginia’s Ring was a moving homage to undergraduate life at Virginia Military Institute. \nCarolina’s Ring follows three young friends on parallel paths through the Citadel and VMI\, then into their adult lives with the far-reaching impacts of growth\, loss and modern war. This is a read\, and conversation\, not to be missed! \nRefreshments and drinks will be provided by Beaufort Bookstore. To reserve a chair please call us at 843-525-1066. Seating is limited\, though we have plenty of standing room available.

SUMMARY:Freedom Day & Harriet Tubman: From the Railroad To a Spy
DESCRIPTION:Two Epic Documentaries 1 Night! Freedom Day | Exploring the Families of Historic Mitchelville & Harriet Tubman | From the Railroad to a Spy \nFebruary 18th at 6pm. Seahawk Theatre – Hilton Head High School\, School Road\, Hilton Head Island\, SC 29926 \nFreedom Day | Exploring the Families of Historic Mitchelville is an epic documentary that chronicles the foundations of the Freedom Day holiday as it follows the journey to freedom of the first families of Hilton Head Island as they experienced it\, from the past into today. Surrounded by hostile forces that wanted to maintain the institution of slavery\, the families were able to become self-sufficient and independent in the Town of Mitchelville\, the first self-governed and fully functioning town in the US for freedmen\, which was established in 1862\, three years prior to the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. \nLearn about their daring escapes towards freedom\, their loyalty and dedication to the Union Army\, as well as their incredible contributions as United States Colored Troop soldiers. As new citizens\, the formerly enslaved Gullah established their independence alongside all of the famous people who came to Hilton Head Island\, including Harriet Tubman and Clara Barton\, who among others\, were instrumental in helping the Union Army turn the direction of the Civil War towards victory. \nRunning time: 52 minutes \n2022 marked the 200th anniversary of Harriet Tubman’s birth\, as well as the memory of one of America’s most profound figures. Tubman was one of the nation’s leading human rights activists who assumed many roles\, including that of an Underground Railroad conductor\, army scout\, nurse\, and women’s rights champion. \nHarriett Tubman also came to Hilton Head and Beaufort and was the first black woman to be a part of US military operations\, including the Combahee River Raid\, which rescued close to 750 enslaved people. Journey through her incredible life story in the epic documentary\, Harriett Tubman | From the Railroad to a Spy that tells her complete story. Journey through the events and details of her incredible life story that are seldom told; from the underground railroad\, to her work as a Union Army scout and spy in military campaigns from South Carolina to Florida. \nRunning time: 56 minutes \nAll proceeds benefit the Lowcountry Gullah Foundation | Historic Gullah Land Preservation Program. \nTickets and more info here.
