SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Java: A Gateway to Game Development
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Lunch and Learn workshop series feature different guest speakers and topics spanning all things tech. Sit down with a bite to eat and get comfortable as you listen & learn along with a local tech expert. \nJoin us for a fun and fascinating event featuring Dr. Brian Canada\, Chair of the Department of Computer Science & Mathematics at USCB. On Tuesday\, March 14\, at the Beaufort Digital Corridor\, Brian will take us on an exciting journey exploring the popular programming language Java and the Greenfoot API that helps in teaching proper object-oriented programming in the context of developing 2D games and simulations that can serve as prototypes for games created using professional-grade engines such as Unity\, in which games are scripted using the C# programming language—a very easy language to learn for those who already know Java. \nBrian is a respected educator in the field of computational science and has been involved in several research projects related to the use of games as a mechanism to enable tangential learning about topics in the social sciences and humanities. His presentation will include some of the best examples of games that his USCB students have created over the years\, and he will discuss why game development is a great way to learn Java as a core tech skill\, even for those who never end up developing games professionally. \nIf you are a novice coder looking for a fun excuse to learn object-oriented programming using Java—which remains one of the most popular and in-demand languages for tech workers—or if you are at all interested in game programming in any language\, this event is a must-attend. Brian’s talk will include an interactive hands-on session to explore the Greenfoot API—you are encouraged to bring your laptop\, download Greenfoot\, and follow along! \nSo\, mark your calendars for March 14 and join us for a fun and exciting Lunch & Learn featuring Brian Canada. You won’t want to miss it! \nCost:\n– Donation (pay what you can)\n– Free lunch will be provided (Taco Tuesday – We’ll be having a Moe’s Taco Bar) \nParking:\n– Metered parking in lot\n– Free street parking on Carteret
