SUMMARY:Ninth Annual Pat Conroy Literary Festival
DESCRIPTION:“I was born to be in a library\,” wrote beloved and bestselling author Pat Conroy (1945-2016) in his book My Reading Life. Hosted by the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center\, this year’s Pat Conroy Literary Festival will pay special tribute to the vital work of librarians in championing the welcoming world of books\, stories\, and storytellers. The Conroy Festival will be held in Beaufort on November 1 and 2\, with the Conroy Center also open to the public for tours on October 31 and November 3. \nNow in its ninth year\, the Conroy Festival is a popular destination event with literary tourists visiting from across the country as well as for local readers\, writers\, educators\, and students of all ages. With a robust schedule of free and ticketed educational and enrichment programs\, this year’s festival will include author conversations and readings\, panel discussions\, writers workshops\, book signings\, musical performances\, guided tours\, a film screening\, and a read-aloud for children and their families. \nFeatured presenters include New York Times bestselling authors Kwame Alexander (Black Star)\, Kirsten Miller (Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books)\, Raj Haldar (This Book Is Banned)\, and Cassandra King (Tell Me a Story)\, as well as Reese’s Book Club author DéLana R.A. Dameron (Redwood Court). A lively panel discussion with Southern women mystery authors will include Agatha Award-winning and USA Today bestselling novelist Susan M. Boyer (The Liz Talbot Mysteries)\, Alicia Bessette (The Outer Banks Bookshop Mysteries)\, and Kristen Ness (At Loggerheads)\, with a special appearance by Gallery Books vice president and executive editor Carrie Feron. \nHigh school and college student volunteers from DAYLO: Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization will host a read-aloud for young readers and their families at the Port Royal Farmers Market. A Freedom to Read panel discussion\, moderated by intellectual freedom champion Pat R. Scales\, will feature youth advocates and librarian advocates who have been instrumental in local\, regional\, and national responses to education censorship. The theme for all artwork should relate to the Port Royal Sound – think ocean\, animals\, beaches\, local culture & history\, and fun in the sun! Entries must be recently created from at least 80% recyclables or trash material. Artists are encouraged to participate in litter pick-ups or collect materials from beaches\, shorelines\, roadways\, neighborhoods\, etc. to incorporate into their piece. Chambers Waterfront Park in downtown Beaufort. \nAt the sale\, over 40\,000 gently used books\, music\, movies and audio books will be available for sale at bargain prices with hardbacks a mere $2 and most paperbacks selling at 50 cents each. \nAll sorts of books will be at the sale from cooking and gardening to the occult and metaphysical. Fiction and mystery are the largest and most popular categories and rare and collectible books include a large selection of local Lowcountry authors and topics. \nOn Friday\, November 1st\, a private sale for all members of the Friends will be held early in the day. If you’re interested in becoming a member\, you can sign up any time before or during the pre-sale to gain access to the pre-sale for only $25 per household\, and only $15 if you are a military household. \nThe Friends of the Beaufort Library annual book sale will open to the general public on Friday\, November 1st from 11am to 8pm\, and will reopen on Saturday from 9am to 6pm. The book sale will reopen from 10am to 3pm on Sunday\, during which time ALL books and audio-visual items will be half-price\, including the big selection of rare and collectible books. This Naturalist-led hike is roughly 1.5 miles through maritime forest and salt marsh. \nLong sleeves\, pants\, sunscreen\, water\, and bug spray are highly recommended. Closed toed shoes are required and they will get muddy! Absolutely NO flip flops or sandals.
