His novels are The Pleasure Was Mine (St. Martin’s Press 2005)\, In the Family Way (Random House\, 1999)\, Sam’s Crossing (Atheneum 1992)\, and YA novel What I Came to Tell You (Egmont\, USA 2013). He has published stories\, profiles and book reviews in magazines\, newspapers and literary journals such as Redbook\, Our State\, The Atlanta Constitution\, The Charlotte Observer\, Smoky Mountain Living\, Still: The Journal\, The Chattahoochee Review\, and storySouth. \nThe winner of many literary awards\, he is founder and formerExecutive Director of the Great Smokies Writing Program\, UNC Asheville’s community writing program as well as Lecturer Emeritus in the Master of Liberal Arts program. \nABOUT THE BOOK-The Marriage Bed:A freak accident comes on the heels of a startling revelation—laying bare the foundation of a marriage\, and a husband is left to grapple with the aftermath. \nA poetry professor at a small college in Asheville\, NC\, Asa Flowers\, comes home one stormy evening to find his wife Betsy inexplicably distraught. As the evening goes on\, the couple end up in a heated argument that sends Asa to sleep out in their garage apartment for the first time intwenty-five years of marriage. The next morning\, he wakes to blue sky and an altered world. \nUnfolding over a few tense weeks and told from multiple points of view\, this novel explores how a tragedy can assume as many shapes as the people it touches. Asa finds himself reckoning with torn feelings about his marriage and confusion about how to proceed in his complicated relationships with his adult children. As he gradually absorbs revelations—so much he didn’t know or understand during his long marriage—he finds himself drawn uneasily toward a new world\, one in which he must shed much of his old identity if he is to survive and\, more important\, rededicate himself to being a father. \nABOUT MINDY FRIDDLE:Mindy Friddle’s first novel\, The Garden Angel\, was selected for Barnes and Noble’s Discover Great New Writers program. SUMMARY:Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park Juneteenth Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park presents the 12th Annual Juneteenth Celebration — a multi-day series of events honoring the legacy of freedom\, Gullah Geechee heritage\, and the community that helped define self-governance in America. \nProgramming spans three days and includes an evening campfire and conversation with nationally recognized historian Joe McGill\, a Children’s Drum Camp and community Drum Circle\, and a full-day festival headlined by GRAMMY-nominated artist Stokley. A Juneteenth 5K presented with Palmetto Running closes out the commemoration on June 19th. \n“Having Stokley headline this year’s festival is something really special\,” said Joyce Wright\, Director of Programs and Interpretation at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. “He brings an incredible depth of artistry and a genuine connection to the music and culture that make this celebration so meaningful. We want every person who comes through those gates on June 13th to feel the joy and the weight of what this place represents — and Stokley’s performance is going to help us do exactly that.” \nHistoric Mitchelville Freedom Park preserves and interprets the story of one of the first self-governed towns of formerly enslaved people in the United States. The Juneteenth Celebration brings together community members\, families\, descendants\, visitors\, and students each year to honor that history through cultural programming rooted in freedom\, education\, and Gullah Geechee heritage. \n“Juneteenth at Mitchelville has always been about more than a single day\,” said Ahmad Ward\, Executive Director of Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. “This weekend\, we are asking families\, neighbors\, descendants\, and visitors to come together on the very ground where freedom was built and lived.” \nMAIN CELEBRATION INFORMATION \nSaturday\, June 13 | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM 12th Annual Juneteenth Celebration Festival featuring Stokley Admission: $10 | Children 10 and under free | \nThe signature event of the weekend brings the full community together for a day of live music\, cultural celebration\, Gullah foodways\, and connection on the historic grounds of Mitchelville. From the first performance to the final set\, the festival is designed to honor history\, uplift community\, and celebrate freedom in a welcoming\, family-friendly atmosphere. \nGuests can expect live music and performances throughout the day\, local artists and vendors showcasing handmade goods\, food trucks and traditional Gullah cuisine\, community storytelling and cultural activations\, dance contests\, karaoke\, interactive programming for all ages\, and youth performances. \nHeadlining the festival is Stokley — GRAMMY-nominated vocalist\, songwriter\, producer\, and multi-instrumentalist\, and lead singer and drummer of the legendary R&B group Mint Condition. Stokley has collaborated with some of the most celebrated names in music\, including Prince\, Whitney Houston\, and Janet Jackson. His 2017 debut solo album\, Introducing Stokley\, produced two top-five Billboard singles\, “Organic” and “Level.” His performance promises to be a fitting close to a day rooted in joy\, resilience\, and community. \nFULL EVENT LINE UP \nThursday\, June 11 | 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM Juneteenth Campfire\, Conversation & Sleepover with Joe McGill An America 250 Event | Admission: $25 Adults | Children under 12 free \nGather around the fire for an evening of meaningful storytelling\, shared history\, and community connection. Joe McGill of The Slave Dwelling Project leads this special program\, inviting participants to reflect on life in the Lowcountry during the Revolutionary War era — including what daily life looked like for enslaved individuals on Hilton Head Island in 1776. As part of the national America 250 commemoration\, the evening offers a thoughtful look at the past while creating space for honest dialogue and reflection in the present. \nGuests will share a family-style dinner prepared with traditional Gullah recipes\, gather around the campfire for guided conversation and storytelling\, and have the option to extend the evening with a primitive-style sleepover on the grounds. Limited tents are available for $25\, and guests are also welcome to bring their own camping equipment. Park restrooms will remain open overnight. \nThis is a rare opportunity to slow down\, sit with history\, and connect — both with the story of this place and with the people gathered to hear it. Registration is required. Bring your own chair and comfort items. Open to all ages. \nFriday\, June 12 | 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM Children’s Drum Camp | Admission: Free \nChildren are invited to take part in this hands-on drumming experience where they will learn basic techniques\, explore rhythm and movement\, and prepare for a special parade through the park that leads directly into the evening’s Drum Circle. Children who pre-register by June 5\, 2026 will receive a take-home keepsake. Open to children of all ages; a parent or guardian must be present. Advance registration is required to ensure materials and supplies. \nFriday\, June 12 | 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM Juneteenth Celebration Drum Circle  Admission: Free | Open to all | No registration required \nThe energy of the Drum Camp carries into this vibrant\, community-wide Drum Circle\, an interactive evening of rhythm\, movement\, and celebration open to all ages. The program opens with a traditional libation ceremony\, a practice of pouring water as a gesture of remembrance and gratitude\, before the drums take over and the community comes alive. Experienced facilitators lead the circle\, and everyone is invited to participate through drumming\, dancing\, or simply taking in the moment. Food and artisan vendors will be on site. Bring your own chair and comfort items. No outside food or drink permitted. \nFriday\, June 19 | 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM Juneteenth 5K with Palmetto Running Registration: $35 Adults | $20 ages 13–18 | Children 12 and under free \nClose out the Juneteenth commemoration with a spirited 5K race celebrating freedom\, unity\, and progress.
