We would like to do this in a variety of ways: \n*Provide Education Scholarships \n*Assist with the Cost of Prom for Underprivileged Students \n*Safe Driving Education \n*Provide Financial Assistance to Families Who Suffer the Loss of a Child \nJoin Madison’s Miracles\, Inc for a FUN 5K Race in Downtown Beaufort in honor of what would have been Madison’s 20th birthday.\nWe run for those who fly. All participants are invited to bring a photo and or write the name of the loved one(s) we run for on a banner which will be displayed every year for this race.\nThe race with start promptly at 8am on Saturday\, June 10\, 2023 on Bay & Newcastle Streets (in front of the Best Western). Run through historic downtown Beaufort and across the famous Woods bridge following a certified 5K course.\nwe plan to invite food trucks and beverage trucks to attend and be available for both participants and spectators. \nPacket pickup will be available at Grounded Running located at 2139 Boundary Street\, Ste 108 Beaufort\, SC 29902 on Friday\, June 9\, 2023 between p.m. Please note that T-shirts and sizes are not guaranteed for registrations after May 10\, 2023. \nRace Day registration/packet pick up: For runners that have not pre-registered\, registration will be available on the day of the race from 7:00 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. for $50.00. Awards are for in-person participants only. We will start awards PROMPTLY at 8:45am. \nEvent is pet and stroller friendly. Flexi-type leashes will not be allowed at the event. Run down Bay Street and across Woods Memorial Bridge to Lady’s Island. Turn Right at Meridian Rd and run down to Youmans Drive and double back the same route to Freedom Mall. \nParking: The closest address reference point for your GPS is the downtown marina parking lot: 1006 Bay St\, Beaufort\, SC 29902. You’ll want to make sure to plan out parking in advance as traffic is to be expected with the bridge blocked off for the race. She will be talking about the “Coastal Explorers and Young Naturalists” and the “St. Phillips Island Adventure” kids camps that Coastal Expeditions will be hosting this summer. \nThis is  the first summer that they are offering summer camps for kids of Beaufort County! These camps get the kids on the water\, exploring the salt marshes and barrier islands of Beaufort\, with each activity *secretly* relating to the South Carolina College and Career Ready Science Standards\, strengthening their team building skills and exercising their STEAM skills.  \nAnnie moved to Beaufort after studying Marine Science and Biology at Coastal Carolina University. She has been a marine science educator since 2017\, working at Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach\, and has had experience in species conservation while working with a variety of animals such as manatees\, sea lions\, macaws\, and panthers. In Beaufort\, she has worked for Hunting Island State Park as the Program Specialist\, the Beaufort Soil and Water Conservation District\, as the Education Coordinator\, and has finally found her home with Coastal Expeditions Beaufort as the Education Coordinator.

It will also serve as a reminder of the women who served in the Beaufort District during the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era to aid the war effort\, abolish slavery\, support freed and contraband Blacks and as teachers\, nurses\, laundresses\, and cooks. These women include Harriet Tubman abolitionist\, conductor of the Underground RailRoad\, Union Army Civilian attache’\, Dr. Esther Hill Hawks medical doctor\, teacher\, Rachel C. Mather founder of the Mather School for Negro Girls\, Susie Baker King teacher\, laundress\, nurse\, Charlotte Forten Grimke’ teacher\, journalist\, hospital volunteer\, Laura M. Towne and Ellen Murray were founders of the Penn School. \nThe Women’s Camping Weekend event provides an opportunity for women to become more comfortable in the outdoors\, participate in recreational activities\, and discover ways to protect and create more natural spaces. Hiking\, kayaking and a wildlife field trip are a few of the activities for the weekend.

SUMMARY:The Water Is Wide -- Pat Conroy Book Club at the Rhett House Inn
DESCRIPTION:The nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center and the award-winning Rhett House Inn will host a monthly book club discussion of Pat Conroy’s dozen books in order of publication\, moderated by Charlene Spearen and Jonathan Haupt. Book discussions will be held on fourth Thursdays beginning at 6:30 p.m. Limited to 20 participants each month. $10/person. Advance registration required. Participants are expected to read the books and to come prepared to discuss them. Discussions will be held at the Rhett House Inn\, 1009 Craven St.\, Beaufort. \nApril 27: The Boo (1970) \nMay 25: The Water Is Wide (1972) \nJune 22: The Great Santini (1976) \nJuly 27: The Lords of Discipline (1980) \nFuture discussion dates will be announced this summer\, once the book club is underway. \nLearn more and register at: https://patconroybookclubatrhetthouseinn.eventbrite.com \nAbout Our Discussion Leaders\nDr. Charlene Monahan Spearen received her MFA degree in Creative Writing and a Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric from the University of South Carolina. She is currently serving as the Public Relations and Special Projects Coordinator for Penn Center after a successful career in academia at Allen University. She served as the Program Coordinator for the University of South Carolina’s Arts Institute and was the Assistant Director for the South Carolina Poetry Initiative. In addition to her work throughout the Carolinas\, Spearen has been a featured reader and Creative Writing instructor and scholar in County Monaghan and County Mayo\, Ireland. She has published a full-length collection of poems titled A Book of Exquisite Disasters. Her poems have appeared in journals and publications throughout the United States. \nJonathan Haupt is the executive director of the nonprofit Conroy Center and the former director of the University of South Carolina Press\, where he created the Story River Books fiction imprint with Pat Conroy\, named by Garden & Gun magazine as one of “the top ten things to love about the South.” Haupt’s book reviews and author interviews have appeared in the Charleston Post and Courier\, Lowcountry Weekly\, Beaufort Lifestyle\, Savannah Morning News’ Beacon magazine\, Southern Review of Books\, and Southern Writers Magazine’s Suite T blog. He is co-editor of the anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy\, the recipient of seventeen book awards. He serves on the boards of the Friends of South Carolina Libraries and the South Carolina Academy of Authors. In 2020\, Haupt was recognized with the Doug Marlette Literacy Leadership Award presented by the Pulpwood Queens\, the largest book club in the U.S.
