SUMMARY:An Evening with Quitman Marshall\, Author of Swampitude
DESCRIPTION:Beaufort Bookstore and the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center will host an evening with poet and writer Quitman Marshall\, author of Swampitude: Escapes with the Congaree\, on Monday\, November 27\, at 5:00 p.m. at the Beaufort Bookstore (2127 Boundary St #15\, Beaufort). \nThis event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for sale and signing. Seating is limited; please call to reserve your spot: 843-525-1066. \nAbout SWAMPITUDE\nA Finalist for the River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Book Prize \n“Swampitude is the kind of book I look for…. I love its mix of the land and the personal and the philosophical. It’s marvelous….”–Joe Mackall\, editor\, River Teeth Journal \nSwampitude: Escapes with the Congaree explores and meditates upon the social\, literary\, historical\, personal\, ecological\, psychological\, and political meanings of a swamp: swamps in general\, and a particular swamp\, the Congaree in the center of South Carolina\, which has been designated a United Nations Biosphere Reserve and is now Congaree National Park. \nA magical place of escape and fecundity\, the Congaree Swamp\, emblematic of all such often forbidding terrains\, is the largest old-growth river bottom forest in the United States. It is in the American South and has filtered much of that region’s history. The Congaree is also lucky to have gathered an environmental movement\, escaped the fate of most similar wetlands\, and to continue to flood\, drain\, and provide refuge for all creatures in need of it. This book celebrates the survival\, the stories\, and the continuance of such places. \nBorn in South Carolina\, Quitman Marshall grew up in the swamp. He has published five books of poetry\, including You Were Born One Time (2014)\, which won the SC Poetry Archives Book Prize. A winner of the Writers Exchange Award sponsored by Poets and Writers\, Inc.\, and the founding coordinator of the Literary Series at the Spoleto Festival\, USA\, he has lived in Barcelona\, Washington\, DC\, Amherst\, MA\, New York City\, the suburbs of Paris\, and presently in Beaufort\, SC\, with his family. He works as a writer\, editor\, translator\, and teacher. \nPeggy Peattie is a multiple award-winning photo-journalist with 40 years experience. She worked for a decade in Los Angeles before joining The State newspaper in SC. There she published Down in Dixie\, a documentary of the racial tensions around the confederate flag. Back in San Diego\, she concentrates on stories of the border with Mexico and the unhoused community.

SUMMARY:Small Business Saturday in Downtown Beaufort
DESCRIPTION:Bring your family and friends to kick off the holiday shopping season by exploring the unique stores throughout Downtown Beaufort. You’ll discover many deals and savings during Black Friday on November 24th\, Small Business Saturday on November 25th\, and Cyber Monday on November 27th. Support your neighbors and shop small in downtown Beaufort this holiday season. \nOn November 25th\, you can be a part of an annual holiday shopping tradition which helps to bring communities together in support of their favorite small businesses. \nSmall Business Saturday encourages shoppers to buy from small\, local businesses rather than big box stores. You’ll have over 60 local Beaufort businesses to browse and enjoy. \nSmall Business Saturday\, which was first celebrated in 2010\, calls to attention the importance of shopping at the small businesses that serve as the backbone of our local communities. Each year\, Small Business Saturday draws crowds to main streets across the country with great deals on unique products and services\, events that encourage shopping locally\, and unique experiences that introduce you to commonly valued neighbors. \nWhy shop small?\nWhen you shop small local businesses you’re making a personal investment in your neighborhood and community. In fact\, for every $100 spent\, roughly $68 to $73 of it returns to local activity. \nMoney is kept in the community because locally-owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses\, service providers and even farms. Purchasing local helps grow other businesses as well as our region’s tax base. \nWhether you realize it or not\, when you shop local you are individually stimulating the local economy with your support and in turn\, helping shape our community’s unique character and personality. \nOh… and don’t shop hungry. You’ll want to make plans to grab breakfast\, lunch\, or dinner at one of our downtown restaurants too. \nAlso\, shoppers will have extra time to get everything on their list this holiday season courtesy of some extended hours downtown. Many of our downtown Beaufort stores will be open until 7pm\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays through January 1st to accommodate shoppers. \nShopping Online?\nCyber Monday is on November 27th. Even if you’re shopping online\, be sure to always “shop local”. Many of our downtown Beaufort merchants have wonderful websites designed for eCommerce and shopping. You’ll be able to browse\, purchase\, and pay at the click of a button. \nNot to mention\, you’re supporting a small business which depends on your thoughtful patronage this holiday season.

SUMMARY:30th Annual Orphans & Strays Free Thanksgiving Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Hosting their 30th annual “Orphans and Strays Thanksgiving Dinner\,” both Hemingway’s and Panini’s on the Waterfront are looking at the holidays as truly a time for giving back to folks in the Beaufort community. \nStarting around 2pm\, the free dinner is being held at Hemingway’s all afternoon long on Thanksgiving Day\, November 23\, 2023. \nImage courtesy Hemingway’s Bistro\nStarted way back in 1993 by the previous owners of Hemingway’s\, the event has grown quite a bit in the time that new owners have kept if going ever since. According to Paul Thompson\, who also owns Panini’s on the Waterfront\, the free event “draws over 150 locals and visitors\,” who would otherwise not have many choices of where to spend the holiday. \nIn fact\, the sense of community is so strong\, Thompson decided to close Panini’s next door for the holiday again this year\, giving his employees the day off as well as passing up on the revenue generated from being one of the few local restaurants open on Thanksgiving so he could focus his efforts on preparing main courses next door at Hemingway’s for those that don’t have anywhere of their own to go. \n“We greatly appreciate all of our regular patrons who have returned over the past 10-plus  years to Panini’s to celebrate with family and enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner\,” Thompson said. “This year\, we have again made the decision to be closed and will be cooking several smoked turkeys and hams for the annual Hemingway’s Bistro ‘Orphans & Strays’ Thanksgiving.” \n“I can’t stress enough the amazing amount of support we get from the community for this special day. This is a great tradition now in its 30th year\, and we are always pleased to be part of it; we love when our locals and visitors all come together for a holiday dinner\,” Thompson told us. \nThe annual Orphans & Strays Thanksgiving is a pot luck where the folks who have been coming regularly year after year bring a side dish\, with both Panini’s and Hemingway’s donating time and money in preparing the main entrées including turkeys\, hams\, mac & cheese\, salads\, etc. \nWhile it’s not necessary to bring anything\, the food is free to all and you can enjoy live entertainment and meet some new friends. While the free dinner is available to everyone starting around 2pm\, the full bar will be available until 1:30am (another post-Thanksgiving dinner tradition). \nIn yet another selfless act by another local\, “Campfire Tyler has graciously agreed to provide his talents for the Orphans and Strays party at Hemingway’s\, away from his family. We thank him for doing this. Tyler is first and foremost a family man that is giving back his time to the community\,” Thompson added. “Hopefully the weather is good and we can have outside entertainment.” \n \nFor a lot of people\, Thanksgiving has become their official binge eating day stuffing themselves with as much turkey and goodies as possible. For others\, it is a day for shoes off and football. Most likely afterwards\, you spend a couple of days eating leftover turkey and stuffing. \nHowever\, there are many others who focus on the true meaning of Thanksgiving which is simply to be thankful for everything you have. The purpose of Thanksgiving is to practice humility and give thanks for whatever it is we do have. \n“The event has become popular and lots of folks look forward to it\,” Thompson said. “So we are going to expand it and also have the same gathering this year on Christmas Day. Anyone and everyone is welcome.” \nHemingway’s Bistro is located at 920 Bay Street (Rear) at downtown Beaufort’s Waterfront Park.
