SUMMARY:Independence Day Celebration at The Sands
DESCRIPTION:Locals and folks visiting the Beaufort area are again in for a treat as the Town of Port Royal will be hosting its Independence Day Celebration and fireworks at the Sands Beach for the 4th of July. \nAfter your done with the day of boating\, relaxing\, barbecuing and having fun with family and friends\, get on down to The Sands for more fun and fireworks. \nThe festivities at The Sands usually start earlier in the afternoon\, and you’ll enjoy lots of family fun including good eats and drinks that will help combat the heat we usually have here in the Lowcountry. \nFood trucks will be lined up on hand to quench your thirst and to offer more goodies. Enjoy fare from Fly Pies\, Beach Bum BBQ\, Maynards\, Blue Sky Italian Ice\, and Tropical Treasures. \nLive entertainment starts later in the day\, and the Iron Mic Parris Island Marine Band will perform from 8pm until the fireworks start. \nFree parking on Paris Avenue and side streets will be available and the road to the Sands landing is usually shut down prior to the 4th of July for all traffic including boats with trailers. 7th Street is typically closed to all traffic except for residents that live on that street. Also\, the Boat Ramp closes July 3rd at Midnight \nThe Town has said that parking at The Sands is for handicapped and golf carts only\, sp be sure to pay attention to that. Also\, no coolers and no pets are permitted\, unless they’re service dogs. \nThe fireworks at The Sands are put on by East Coast Pyrotechnics and usually begin around 915pm. \nYes\, what better way to celebrate the 4th of July in Beaufort than fireworks\, family fun and community at the Sands in Port Royal. \nIt’s a lot of fun and you won’t find a better place to enjoy a night of celebrating than with fireworks at the Sands Beach.

SUMMARY:Volunteer: Oyster Reef Build with SCDNR
DESCRIPTION:Get muddy with us as we volunteer with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Oyster Recycling and Enhancement program (SCDNR SCORE) to restore oyster reefs along the Beaufort River! \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWhile reef builds are a blast\, they are labor intensive! Expect to get muddy and wet\, be in the sun\, and get some exercise. Volunteers should be capable of and enjoy working in soft pluff mud while lifting and passing up to 40-pound bags of oyster shell and wire cages. \nWe will meet at the Parris Island Boat Ramp (off-base) located at 21 Marina Blvd to sign volunteer waivers\, meet SCDNR’s oyster restoration crew\, learn about the importance of oyster reefs to our coastal environment\, and hear the game plan for the day. Following the briefing\, we will load the material onto the boats and head out to the site for the restoration. \nWHAT TO WEAR/BRING:\n– Closed-toe shoes. Rainboots/ muck boots are recommended. If you do not have boots\, old sneakers will work. No sandals!\n– Clothes you don’t mind getting muddy or stained.\n– Hat\n– Sunscreen\n– Reusable water bottle – there will be a water cooler to refill.\n– I recommend leaving a set of clean clothes in your car to change into after the build \nRegistration required as there is limited space\, and we need an accurate headcount for the boats. \n— \nPlease note\, this is challenging\, but rewarding\, work. If this is not within your wheelhouse\, please check out our other volunteer and event opportunities here! \n— \nShould we need to cancel due to weather\, an email will be sent the evening prior to the event. If registration is full\, please send me an email at rachelh@scccl.org and I will put you on the waitlist. If you need to back out before the event\, please let me know\, so I can fill your spot.

SUMMARY:Camp Conroy 2025 (Camp #2)
DESCRIPTION:Camp Conroy is now TWO one-week day camps for young writers and artists. Camp#1 for campers ages 9 to 12 will be held on June 9 to 13 (Monday to Friday\, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). Camp#2 for campers ages 13 to 16 will be held on June 23 to 27 (Monday to Friday\, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) Hosted by the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center\, both camps will be held at Robert Smalls Leadership Academy in Beaufort\, SC. \nRegistration: https://campconroy2025.eventbrite.com \nThis year’s camp theme\, Mirrors\, Windows\, and Sliding Glass Doors\, honors the work of Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop\, who developed her metaphor as a way of describing how books can help readers to see themselves\, see others\, and enter into new experiences and understanding. \nDuring each of the two camps\, we will be building a book together by creating–individually and collaboratively–the writing and art that we will publish together in our anthology\, then critiquing\, editing\, and designing our work in preparation for publication. Although our two age groups are divided into separate weeks\, they will be contributing to a special collaborative project together as well. \nCampers can explore a range of writing genres\, from poetry to short stories to micro-memoirs; as well as multiple forms of self-expression in the visual arts\, including drawing\, painting\, and photography. They will be guided through their creative endeavors by Camp Conroy’s talented counselors\, full-time adult instructors\, and special guest presenters and instructors. A final reading and presentation of camper creations will conclude the experience\, and campers will each receive a copy of the camp anthology on publication later this summer. \nCamp Conroy invites diversity and inclusivity among our campers with respect to race\, religion\, ability\, and all other aspects of identity. Scholarships are available to assist campers who might not otherwise be able to take part in this experience. \nThe $250 registration fee for Camp Conroy includes one week of instruction\, camp activities\, and healthy daily snacks. Students must bring their own lunches and drinks each day. (This is a day camp; overnight lodging and meals are not included.) After the camp\, participants will each receive a copy of their published anthology. Registration closes on May 20. \nIn the 2004 Pat Conroy Cookbook\, Pat describes his “Bill Dufford Summer” spent between his junior and senior years on the campus of Beaufort High School (what is now Beaufort Middle School\, the site of last year’s Camp Conroy). It was a transformative summer for Pat and for his principal\, mentor\, and surrogate father figure\, Bill Dufford. As Pat writes at the end of his recollection\, “I had everything—the best summer of my life.” That has been and remains the goal of our Camp Conroy\, to give our campers the best summers of their lives. We hope you will join us this year. \nScholarships: A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available. To apply\, interested students should submit a sample of their work (story\, essay\, poem\, artwork\, or photography) with a brief letter about their interest in the Camp Conroy experience by May 22\, to the Pat Conroy Literary Center\, Attention: Camp Conroy\, 601 Bladen Street\, Beaufort\, SC 29902. Please specify the age of the camper so we know which of the two weeks you are applying for. Scholarship recipients will be contacted in early June. \nSponsorships: We welcome your tax-deductible donations to the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center to sponsor a Camper\, a Camp Counselor\, a Camp Instructor\, or a Guest Presenter. Scholarships for Campers make it possible for young writers and artists to participate in this experience who might not otherwise have the opportunity. Sponsorships of Camp Counselors\, Camp Instructors\, and Guest Presenters benefit all of our Campers. For details: https://campconroy2025.eventbrite.com
