SUMMARY:What the Water Witnessed: From Revolution to Reconstruction
DESCRIPTION:Join Reconstruction Era National Historical Park for a new summer lecture series. The fourth lecture in the series will be by Park Ranger Samantha Mischke: \nIn recent years\, the 1863 Combahee River Raid has received a lot of attention by both historians and the local community. But those liberated that night during the Civil War were not the first to see military service as a possible path to freedom. Park Ranger Samantha Mischke will share how during the American Revolution\, Patriot leader John Laurens pushed for the recruitment of Black men along the Combahee River into the Continental Army\, connecting the Lowcountry experiences during the Revolutionary period with the Reconstruction era a century later.

SUMMARY:Reggae Pon De River
DESCRIPTION:The Reggae Pon De River is a laid-back outdoor reggae music festival typically held along the scenic riverfront in the Lowcountry of Bluffton. It blends live music\, Caribbean culture\, and a relaxed coastal vibe into one easygoing community event. At its core\, the festival is about live reggae performances. You’ll usually find a mix of regional bands and tribute acts covering legends like Bob Marley\, along with original roots reggae\, dub\, and island-influenced sounds. The music runs for hours\, often stretching from afternoon into the evening\, with the river and moss-draped oaks setting the backdrop.Beyond the music\, it has a mini cultural festival feel: \nFood vendors serve Caribbean-inspired dishes—jerk chicken\, rice and peas\, plantains—alongside Southern staples. \nLocal craft booths feature handmade goods\, art\, and island-themed merchandise. \nFamily-friendly atmosphere\, where people bring lawn chairs\, blankets\, and sometimes even kayaks or paddleboards to enjoy the setting. \nThe vibe is casual and communal rather than high-energy or commercial. Think small-to-mid-sized crowds\, plenty of space to relax\, and a strong emphasis on good vibes\, sunshine\, and rhythm rather than big-name headliners. If you’re considering going\, it’s less like a massive festival and more like a chill riverside gathering with a reggae soundtrack—perfect for unwinding rather than partying hard.

SUMMARY:Land's End Woodland River Festival
DESCRIPTION:The annual Lands End Woodland River Festival is returning to St. Helena Island for its 21st year on Labor Day weekend\, Friday\, September 4th and Saturday\, September 5th. \nThe festival is a two‑day family friendly\, cultural event\, celebrating the ancestry of the 47 Gullah families who pooled their money together and purchased 328 acres of land at Lands End on St. Helena Island in the 1920’s. \nFamilies on the Island wanted a place to have fun\, fish\, hunt\, chop wood for kindling\, and bury their family members; not to mention to be able to have a legacy for future descendants and for the land to be carried down through the decades. \nThey called themselves the Woodland Club and held events to raise money to pay the property taxes over the remainder of the 20th Century. \nThe River Festival is an annual Labor Day weekend favorite for residents and visitors looking to enjoy cultural festivities along with the rich history of St. Helena Island. \nOn Friday\, September 4th\, enjoy an day of fun starting at 12pm with a traditional Crab Crack and Fish Fry with entertainment along the river bank alongside the historic tabby ruins of the Riverside Plantation\, next to historic Fort Fremont. \nOn Saturday\, September 5th\, from 10am to 7pm\, enjoy a day full of music and performances by Aunt Pearlie Sue\, African dancers & drummers\, a Libation Ceremony and Gullah Storytellers along with local cultural groups and lots of food\, seafood\, Disney Princesses\, craft vendors and a whole lot more. \nThe mission of the Lands End Woodland River Festival is to conserve and utilize the property as intended by the founders and to keep its legacy alive. \nThe festival is located 6 miles south of the historic Penn Center on St. Helena Island at 100 Lands End Road. Visit this link for a map if you’re unsure how to get there.
