SUMMARY:Gullah Doll House\, A Collaborative Exhibit by Kerrie Brown & Friends at Art League Academy
DESCRIPTION:Kerrie Brown\, a Hilton Head native and Gullah descendant\, continues a family tradition and celebrates her heritage through making dolls. With snowflake eyes and triangle noses\, these charming oversized dolls are both a commentary on current times and treasured keepsakes of the past. One doll sports a COVID mask\, others wear military camouflage. Two have mermaid tails and button eyes. \n“These dolls are an expression of Gullah culture that everyone can relate to\,” says Amy Wehrman\, Art League Academy manager. “They are at once familiar and approachable—a wonderful use of fiber arts to evoke a time and place not easily understood by everyone.” \nBrown can trace her roots on Hilton Head Island since before the Civil War. For generations\, the tradition of sewing has been passed down through her family; she herself was taught the art of hand sewing by her great-grandaunt\, and the use of a sewing machine by her mother when she was 12. “I always think about that time when I am making the dolls.” Brown continues the tradition by hand-making dolls in the Gullah style—dyed muslin\, patterned cotton\, yarn and thread. \nGullah Doll House\, a Collective Exhibit by Kerrie Brown & Friends will be on display at Art League Academy from April 4 to June 3. \nArt League Academy is located south-island at 106 Cordillo Parkway.

SUMMARY:An Afternoon with T.D. Johnston\, author of Reciprocity
DESCRIPTION:Our nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center will host an afternoon with T.D. Johnston\, author of the debut novel Reciprocity\, on Saturday\, May 14\, at 2:00 p.m. at the Conroy Center (601 Bladen St.). This in-person event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for sale and signing. Seating is limited; please call to reserve your spot: 843-379-7025. \n“The pages turn at paper-cutting speed in this absorbing and addictive novel. Johnston is a daring writer of supreme importance.”–Mathieu Cailler\, author of Loss Angeles \n“Reciprocity is a thrilling chase\, at once a page-turner and a morality tale. What a ride!”–Gregg Cusick\, author of My Father Moves through Time like a Dirigible \nAbout Reciprocity: When a third Mafia boss in a third major city is murdered by an unknown entity\, FBI organized-crime agents Jack Hanratty and Neville Parker are assigned to lead the national investigation of what the media dubs ‘The Godfather Assassinations.’ As the cabal continues to eliminate the leadership of the powerful Mafia\, La Cosa Nostra’s ruling ‘Commission’ responds by importing Fingo\, the legendary Sicilian mercenary\, to track down the killers. When Fingo kidnaps Agent Hanratty’s pregnant wife\, Jack faces an impossible ransom request: to save Rachel’s life\, Jack and Neville must deliver the Godfather Assassins to Fingo rather than arrest the vigilantes. Jack and Neville race against time and two formidable enemies toward an epic showdown between justice and injustice\, colored by the gray area that complicates human decisions. \nT.D. Johnston won the 2017 International Book Award for Best Short Fiction for Friday Afternoon and Other Stories. His stories have appeared in numerous magazines and literary journals\, and the title story of his award-winning collection was made into an acclaimed short film. Since 2010 he has served as the series editor and publisher at Short Story America\, a quality literary press specializing in anthologies and collections of short fiction by today’s authors. Johnston taught World Literature\, American Literature\, and Creative Writing at several of America’s top college-preparatory schools\, and he headed two schools before leaving the academic world to focus on writing and editing full-time. He lives with his wife and three children in Jacksonville\, Florida\, and Beaufort\, South Carolina.

SUMMARY:The Faith of Pat Conroy\, presented by Jonathan Haupt and Holland Perryman
DESCRIPTION:“When I thought God had abandoned me\, I discovered that He had simply given me a different voice to praise the inexhaustible beauty of the made world.”—Pat Conroy\, My Losing Season \nFirst Presbyterian Church of Beaufort and the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center will host the special in-person community outreach event\, The Faith of Pat Conroy\, on Wednesday\, May 18\, at 6:00 p.m.\, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian (410 Church St.\, Beaufort). Free and open to the public\, this educational program is presented by Jonathan Haupt and Holland Perryman. \nAcclaimed southern storyteller Pat Conroy (1945-2016) is best remembered as the author of a dozen beloved books\, including The Water Is Wide\, The Great Santini\, The Lords of Discipline\, and The Prince of Tides. The Faith of Pat Conroy explores the famed author’s spiritual and humanistic faith as reflected in his turbulent life and bestselling books—from his Roman Catholic upbringing to The Citadel’s honor code to themes of spirituality in his writings to his life of service as a mentor to his fellow writers to his connections to his “second church\,” First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort. \nAbout Our Presenters\nThe grandson of a Methodist minister\, Jonathan Haupt is the executive director of the nonprofit Conroy Center and the former director of the University of South Carolina Press. Haupt’s book reviews and author interviews have appeared in the Charleston Post and Courier\, Lowcountry Weekly\, Beaufort Lifestyle\, Savannah Morning News’ Beacon magazine\, Southern Review of Books\, and Southern Writers Magazine’s Suite T blog. He is co-editor of the anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy\, the recipient of seventeen book awards. In 2020\, Haupt was recognized with the Doug Marlette Literacy Leadership Award of the Pulpwood Queens\, the largest book club in the U.S. \nThe daughter of First Presbyterian Church’s senior pastor Rev. Patrick Perryman\, Beaufort High School senior Holland Perryman is the founder of DAYLO: Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization and the winner of the second annual Ann Head Literary Prize for Short Story. Her book reviews and author interviews have been published in the Charleston Post and Courier\, Lowcountry Weekly\, and the Southern Review of Books. Perryman is the first student intern of the Pat Conroy Literary Center and the Friends of South Carolina Libraries. She will begin her studies at Vanderbilt University as a Chancellor’s Scholar in the fall of 2022. \nLearn more about the Pat Conroy Literary Center: www.PatConroyLiteraryCenter.org \nLearn more about First Presbyterian Church: www.firstpresbeaufort.org
