SUMMARY:Gullah Doll House\, A Collaborative Exhibit by Kerrie Brown & Friends at Art League Academy
DESCRIPTION:Kerrie Brown\, a Hilton Head native and Gullah descendant\, continues a family tradition and celebrates her heritage through making dolls. With snowflake eyes and triangle noses\, these charming oversized dolls are both a commentary on current times and treasured keepsakes of the past. One doll sports a COVID mask\, others wear military camouflage. Two have mermaid tails and button eyes. \n“These dolls are an expression of Gullah culture that everyone can relate to\,” says Amy Wehrman\, Art League Academy manager. “They are at once familiar and approachable—a wonderful use of fiber arts to evoke a time and place not easily understood by everyone.” \nBrown can trace her roots on Hilton Head Island since before the Civil War. For generations\, the tradition of sewing has been passed down through her family; she herself was taught the art of hand sewing by her great-grandaunt\, and the use of a sewing machine by her mother when she was 12. “I always think about that time when I am making the dolls.” Brown continues the tradition by hand-making dolls in the Gullah style—dyed muslin\, patterned cotton\, yarn and thread. \nGullah Doll House\, a Collective Exhibit by Kerrie Brown & Friends will be on display at Art League Academy from April 4 to June 3. \nArt League Academy is located south-island at 106 Cordillo Parkway.

SUMMARY:“The Reveille of Freedom”: Decoration Day in the Age of Reconstruction
DESCRIPTION:“Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains\, and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms.” – General John Logan\, 1868 \nWhen US General John Logan issued orders in 1868 formalizing the establishment of Decoration Day in 1868\, he tapped into an existing movement of mourning. Throughout the South\, Black Americans had already begun gathering at national cemeteries to celebrate\, as one reporter to a cemetery in Georgia remarked\, “those through whose sufferings and death a race rose up from chains.” Join Park Ranger Chris Barr on Wednesday May 25 at 6pm at the Second Founding of America Learning Center at 913 West Street for a special presentation on the history of Decoration Day and explore how this Reconstruction era commemoration served as an emancipation celebration in many communities. \n*This presentation will be recorded\, but we are still working on a livestream option*

SUMMARY:Beaufort Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:After a COVID-19 hiatus\, just like nearly everything else\, the annual Beaufort Memorial Day Parade is back\, scheduled for Monday\, May 30th at 10am. \nThe parade will follow the traditional route along Boundary Street from Rogers Street\, onto Carteret Street\, Bay Street and then back to Rogers Street ending at the Beaufort National Cemetery. \nAt noon\, a ceremony to commemorate all those in the military who lost their lives in service to our Country will be held at the Beaufort National Ceremony. The keynote speaker will be Cmdr. LaDonna M. Simpson\, who is the commanding officer of the USS Carter Hall\, a Navy ship used in amphibious assaults\, among other things. \nCmdr. Simpson’s decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal\, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards)\, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards)\, and the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation (two awards). \nMemorial Day is for honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military fighting for our liberty and freedom. \nIt’s not a day for celebrating. It’s a day for remembering. \nOriginally known as Decoration Day\, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials\, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially\, it marks the beginning of the summer season. \nAll are encouraged to come to Beaufort’s Memorial Day parade and honor those that have fallen for our Country. \nIf you are interested in participating\, please call Elijah Washington at 843-263-4620. \n  \nFor more info\, visit this link. \nFor more upcoming events\, visit our Event Calendar.

SUMMARY:"Local Color" by Heidi Stone Lifrage Art Exhibit & Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Local Color” by Heidi Stone Lifrage will be on exhibit at USCB Center for the Arts March 13-May 31\, Monday- Friday\, 9am-6pm. The exhibit is free and all are invited to attend. \nPlease join us for the Opening reception Thursday\, April 14\, 5:30pm-7pm to meet the artist and view the exhibit. \nA native of Atlanta\, Georgia\, Heidi has lived the majority of her life in South Carolina and Florida. Heidi is a 1983 graduate of Beaufort Academy. In 1997\, she moved to Sofia\, Bulgaria where she took her first art class. Heidi was hooked. Twenty years and three children later\, her passion for painting has also become her profession. \nHeidi specializes in oils\, but also enjoys acrylic. Children are among her favorite subjects to paint. Initially\, she illustrated her two sons. As her family grew to include a daughter\, her love and interest in paintings grew. Heidi’s works have expanded to include commissioned pieces for other families. She continues diversifying the scope of her paintings to keep her interests fresh\, such as landscapes and architecture. \nBright colors and thick\, layered paints are central to Heidi’s work. Influenced by the works of Susie Pryor (bold passion and reflection) and Carolyn Anderson (yin and yang\, light and dark\, warm and cool)\, Heidi is inspired to experiment sweeping from abstract to realism. Painting is a never-ending journey\, and she loves to travel! \nMerits: National Finalist\, Florida Tomato Council\, International Contemporary Masters Art Chronicle\, Maitland Art Center Participation Fundraiser\, Crealde School of Art Show\, Country Club of Orlando Art Show\, 2020 Winter Park Autumn Art Festival Poster Winner

SUMMARY:An Evening with NYT Bestselling Author Matt Goldman\, author of Carolina Moonset
DESCRIPTION:Set in our beloved Beaufort\, Carolina Moonset\, the thrilling new novel from New York Times bestselling author Matt Goldman\, will be published on Tuesday\, May 31. Join us that evening\, at 5:00 p.m.\, for a launch event at Beaufort Bookstore\, presented in partnership with the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center. Matt Goldman will be interviewed by Conroy Center executive director Jonathan Haupt. \nBooks will be available for sale and signing. Please contact the bookstore to reserve your seat for this free event: 843-525-1066. \nAbout Carolina Moonset and Matt Goldman:\n“A compelling story of how the past is never the past… I loved this book.”–William Kent Krueger \nJoey Green has returned to Beaufort\, South Carolina\, with its palmettos and shrimp boats\, to look after his ailing father\, who is succumbing to dementia\, while his overstressed mother takes a break. Marshall Green’s short-term memory has all but evaporated\, but\, as if in compensation\, his oldest memories are more vivid than ever. His mind keeps slipping backwards in time\, retreating into long-ago yesterdays of growing up in Beaufort as a boy. \nAt first this seems like a blessing of sorts\, with the past providing a refuge from a shrinking future\, but Joey grows increasingly anxious as his father’s hallucinatory arguments with figures from his youth begin to hint at deadly secrets\, scandals\, and suspicions long buried and forgotten. Resurfacing from decades past are mysteries that still have the power to shatter lives―and change everything Joey thought he knew. Especially when a new murder brings the police to his door. \nNew York Times best-selling author Matt Goldman is also a playwright and Emmy Award-winning television writer for Seinfeld\, Ellen\, and other shows. He brings his signature storytelling abilities and light touch to his Nils Shapiro series\, which begins with Gone to Dust. He lives in Minnesota with his wife\, two dogs\, two cats\, and whichever children happen to be around. (Matt Goldman author photo credit: Leslie Parker) \nAbout our Host:\nJonathan Haupt is the executive director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center\, the former director of the University of South Carolina Press\, and coeditor of the anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy\, winner of 17 book awards.

SUMMARY:Kayak Tours of Jarvis Creek
DESCRIPTION:Kayak Tours of Jarvis Creek\nJarvis Creek Watersports\nTuesday\, Wednesday & Thursday\, 10 AM \nJoin a naturalist guide in a kayak exploration of Jarvis Creek. \nPaddle through the salt marsh looking for bottle-nosed dolphins\, wading birds and other local wildlife. Jarvis Creek is a small creek in the north end of Hilton Head Island not typically visited by recreational boaters. The absence of fast-moving boats\, calm water and the many inlets and side creeks make it the ideal location to see wildlife. \nGiven the physical requirements of this tour\, we do not allow children younger than 5 years of age to participate. Children ages 5 to 12 must be in a double kayak with an adult. \nCost is $40/Adult or $36/Child (ages 5-12 with an adult). Reservations are required\, call (843) 689-6767 ext. 223 or book online at coastaldiscovery.org/calendar.
