DESCRIPTION:For the 14th year\, historic First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort will present a free weekend-long Annual Nativity Celebration on December 5-7 – featuring more than 200 nativity scenes from around the world. \n“Each year we bring new nativities to display alongside many of the annual favorites\,”\nsaid Donna Sheetz\, First Presbyterian’s Volunteer Nativity Event Coordinator. “This\nyear is so special as we will be featuring a special collection from the women of St.\nPeter’s Catholic Church.” \nFirst Presbyterian Church of Beaufort is preparing for nearly 1\,000 visitors to come\nthrough for this community-wide Advent tradition. Past attendees share not only how\nmuch they are moved by the experience\, but that the display brings back sweet\nmemories from their childhood\, travels\, and time with family. Many times people are\ninspired to share their own treasured pieces for the next year’s event. Collectors always\nhave a story to share – some are grand accounts of travel\, gifts or inheritance\, while\nothers found their treasures in a local thrift store. The nativities range from lovely home\ncrafted treasures to exquisite porcelain figures. \n“Everyone is welcome\, and it is a wonderful event to experience with your spouse\,\nfriends or a grandchild. DESCRIPTION:On the first Saturday of every month\, you can join the student volunteers of DAYLO: Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization for a Teddy Bear Picnic read-aloud at the Port Royal Farmers Market (1615 Ribaut Rd.). In collaboration with the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center\, high school and college student volunteers from the Beaufort-based chapters of DAYLO gather at the gazebo in Naval Heritage Park from 9:30 a.m. to noon to read diverse\, inclusive picture books to children and their families\, inspiring a love of stories\, books\, reading\, and peer-to-peer mentoring.  \nCozy blankets\, a plethora of stuffed animals\, and some snacks help the students make a welcoming environment in this free community literacy program. Several times a year\, National Park Service Ranger Katherine Freeman also joins in for Read with a Ranger\, a literacy and art project thematically connected to the missions of DAYLO\, the Conroy Center\, and the Reconstruction Era National Historic Park.  \nDAYLO is a student-led diversity themed book club and community service group founded at Beaufort High School and now with chapters across South Carolina.
