SUMMARY:Artist Talk: An Evening with John Duckworth
DESCRIPTION:TimePlace: An Evening with John DuckworthLandscape\, photography\, and wine. \nJoin us for an intimate artist talk and wine tasting exploring the intersection of process\, place\, and perspective. \nIn TimePlace\, painter and photographer John Duckworth shares the deeper story behind his work — how time spent observing the land shapes what ultimately appears on canvas and through the lens. His paintings and photographs are not simply representations of scenery; they are studies in light\, atmosphere\, and lived experience — moments distilled through patience and presence. \nCentral to this conversation is the idea of place as collaborator. Whether working outside in nature or composing a photographic frame\, Duckworth approaches the landscape as something dynamic and relational — shaped by weather\, season\, memory\, and human connection. His process is deliberate and immersive\, grounded in returning to the same environments again and again to understand how they shift over time. \nThat same reverence for place extends beyond the gallery walls. \nFeatured during the evening are TimePlace Wines\, whose labels showcase Duckworth’s landscapes — transforming his visual interpretations of the land into vessels that carry those stories outward. Just as his paintings and photographs capture the character of a location\, the wines themselves are expressions of terroir — shaped by soil\, climate\, and craft. Together\, image and wine create a layered dialogue about how land imprints itself onto both art and agriculture. \nTimePlace Wine Co. / Napa\, CA \nThroughout the evening\, guests will enjoy curated wine tastings while hearing directly from the artist about: \nThe evolution of his landscape practice \nThe relationship between painting and photography in his work \nThe translation of landscape imagery onto the TimePlace labels \nHow time\, repetition\, and observation shape artistic perspective \nThis is not simply a talk\, but a conversation — an opportunity to slow down\, to look more closely\, and to consider how place influences what we see\, what we make\, and even what we taste. \nAn evening for collectors\, creatives\, and anyone who feels a connection to the land.

SUMMARY:3rd Annual Chalk It Up Festival in Downtown
DESCRIPTION:Beaufort is about to burst into color\, and the excitement is building. On Saturday and Sunday\, March 28–29\, Chalk It Up! returns as a joyful celebration of creativity\, community\, and the power of art to bring people together.\n\n\nHosted by the Freedman Arts District\, this free\, family-friendly festival transforms ordinary pavement into an extraordinary canvas\, inviting residents and visitors alike to witness imagination come alive in real time.\n\n\nBeginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and continuing through 5 p.m. Sunday\, nationally recognized chalk artists will spend two inspiring days crafting breathtaking\, large-scale works of art directly on the pavement beside Tabby Place on Port Republic Street. Guests will not only see art unfold before their eyes\, they will experience the creative process\, meet the artists\, and feel the energy that happens when a community gathers around beauty and expression.\n\n\n\nTraditional craft artisans will demonstrate their skills on Saturday\, while Sunday will feature a spirited chalk art competition among local middle and high school students.\n\nThroughout the weekend\, live music from beloved area performers will fill the air with rhythm and celebration.\n\nFor artists and audiences alike\, Chalk It Up! is more than an event\, it is a shared moment of wonder.\n\nVisiting artist Jennifer Ripassa describes street painting as performance art\, where pavement becomes a stage and chalk becomes a tool for transformation\, turning blank concrete into something vivid\, meaningful\, and alive.\n\nMaster chalk artist Lisa Sandrowicz shares a similar vision\, emphasizing connection\, inspiration\, and the importance of nurturing the next generation of artists so that creativity continues to flourish in communities everywhere.\n\nBe sure to come downtown and enjoy the fun as dozens of artists from all over the USA converge on Beaufort to create their art and join everyone in having a good time.\n\nThe annual event is free and open to the public. Growing up mostly in South Carolina\, Kristen spent countless days with nature and fell in love with the ocean and its creatures on Isle of Palms\, where\, for the past ten years\, she has walked the beach at sunrise each summer in search of sea turtle nests as a volunteer for the Island Turtle Team. Writing\, real estate\, politics\, and even publishing run in her blood as the daughter of an English teacher and a land developer\, and the great-granddaughter of the 14th Governor of North Dakota whose family owned and published The Bismarck Tribune. She has a BA in English from Duke University and a JD from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Kristen lives in Charleston\, SC\, with her husband\, their two children\, two guinea pigs\, and a cat.
