With snowflake eyes and triangle noses\, these charming oversized dolls are both a commentary on current times and treasured keepsakes of the past. One doll sports a COVID mask\, others wear military camouflage. Two have mermaid tails and button eyes. \n“These dolls are an expression of Gullah culture that everyone can relate to\,” says Amy Wehrman\, Art League Academy manager. “They are at once familiar and approachable—a wonderful use of fiber arts to evoke a time and place not easily understood by everyone.”  \nBrown can trace her roots on Hilton Head Island since before the Civil War. For generations\, the tradition of sewing has been passed down through her family; she herself was taught the art of hand sewing by her great-grandaunt\, and the use of a sewing machine by her mother when she was 12. “I always think about that time when I am making the dolls.” Brown continues the tradition by hand-making dolls in the Gullah style—dyed muslin\, patterned cotton\, yarn and thread.  \nGullah Doll House\, a Collective Exhibit by Kerrie Brown & Friends will be on display at Art League Academy from April 4 to June 3.  \nArt League Academy is located south-island at 106 Cordillo Parkway.

SUMMARY:'Who We Are' Screening & Discussion at USCB
DESCRIPTION:A screening and discussion of the powerful documentary film Who We Are\, will be hosted on May 4th at 6pm at USCB Center for the Arts. \nThe audience engagement and panel discussion will be facilitated by Dr. Gloria Graves-Holmes\, Professor emerita of The School of Education at Quinnipiac University Camden\, CT\, and Adjunct Professor at USCB where she also serves on the Committee for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion.  The panel\, selected to represent diverse perspectives and experiences\, includes Margaret Seidler\, Davis Folsom\, and Heaven Allah-Davis. \nThe film is a stark examination of racism in America seen through the eyes of activist Jeffrey Robinson and informed by his body of work as a civil rights and criminal defense attorney.  In the film\, Robinson explores the origins of racism in America and the link between systemic white supremacy\, Jim Crow era ideology\, and the dilution and erosion of civil rights and social justice laws and reform.  Robinson reveals some not-so convenient- truths about the evolution and presence of systemic injustice and racial disenfranchisement that exists in the country and the great divide between races that is slow to shrink and\, in some ways\, widening.​ \n“It was important for us to present this opportunity to the public\,” says Bonnie Hargrove\, USCB Center for the Arts Director. “In Beaufort\, we are creating safe spaces\, having these difficult conversations\, and talking together with respect and civility as we try to understand one another and work to improve how we relate.”​ \nEveryone is invited and encouraged to attend. \nTickets for the film and discussion are $5 and are available for advance purchase online and at the USCB box office. \nTickets will be also available on the evening of the event on a first-come-first-served basis.

DESCRIPTION:Kerrie Brown\, a Hilton Head native and Gullah descendant\, continues a family tradition and celebrates her heritage through making dolls. With snowflake eyes and triangle noses\, these charming oversized dolls are both a commentary on current times and treasured keepsakes of the past. One doll sports a COVID mask\, others wear military camouflage. Two have mermaid tails and button eyes. \n“These dolls are an expression of Gullah culture that everyone can relate to\,” says Amy Wehrman\, Art League Academy manager. “They are at once familiar and approachable—a wonderful use of fiber arts to evoke a time and place not easily understood by everyone.”  \nBrown can trace her roots on Hilton Head Island since before the Civil War. For generations\, the tradition of sewing has been passed down through her family; she herself was taught the art of hand sewing by her great-grandaunt\, and the use of a sewing machine by her mother when she was 12. “I always think about that time when I am making the dolls.” Brown continues the tradition by hand-making dolls in the Gullah style—dyed muslin\, patterned cotton\, yarn and thread.  \nGullah Doll House\, a Collective Exhibit by Kerrie Brown & Friends will be on display at Art League Academy from April 4 to June 3.  \nArt League Academy is located south-island at 106 Cordillo Parkway.

DESCRIPTION:The foodie’s delight is returning to downtown’s Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park with the annual two-day Taste of Beaufort festival on May 6th & 7th. Local restaurants will gather in the grass at the park to cook up some of their best Lowcountry cuisine and show everyone what it tastes like to be in Beaufort SC. \nThe event will take over the waterfront park on Friday\, May 6th from 5 to 10pm and on Saturday\, May 7th from 11am to 4pm. \nAdmission to the event at Waterfront Park is free and festival goers can purchase tickets to use at food and beverage vendor booths. If you’re looking forward to the food\, you’ll always find plenty of it including local seafood everywhere. Festival-goers enjoy the smell of fresh grilled shrimp in the air while savoring local favorites including shrimp & grits\, crab cakes and lots more. \nLots of fun will be found for kids of all ages as this year’s event features face painting\, a huge kid’s corner or the little ones and the big kids can have some fun learning to airbrush with the folks from Coastal Art Supply. \nThe music line up this year is a good one\, too. \nFriday night brings Departure\, the popular Journey tribute band from Atlanta\, GA\, on stage at 730pm. Performing over one hundred shows nationally per year\, Departure brings the very best of Journey to audiences of all ages. \nOn Saturday\, the day full of live music starts with Chris Jones at 1115am\, followed by the Parris Island Marine Band at 1230pm. Then it’s Liz Jane at 145pm followed by Tricky Lick Blues Band at 3pm. \nThe City of Beaufort presents the 2022 Run to the Table 5K Run/Walk on Saturday at 8am on Bay at Newcastle Street. The 5k course is USATF Certified the race start/finish line is on Bay Street in-between the Marina and Best Western. DESCRIPTION:After a two-year pandemic hiatus\, AMIkids Beaufort will again host croquet players and fun lovers from across the Lowcountry May 7 at Brays Island to raise money for the residential education and treatment program for boys who made bad choices. \nAMIkids is part of a national organization but is locally governed. For 30 years\, the Croquet Picnic has been the primary means of raising local money to help the program succeed. \n“We are thrilled to once again be out in the open at Brays Island to celebrate AMIkids Beaufort through our croquet picnic\,” said John Williams\, chair of the local board. “For two years we depended on our dedicated supporters to help keep us afloat without croquet\, but now we’ve got the wickets painted\, the grounds are being prepped and we are on schedule for May 7.” \nAt the Croquet Picnic\, the Board of Trustees will announce a major and critical initiative for the AMIkids Beaufort campus. \nThe AMIkids model pays off: Young men who complete AMIkids typically don’t run afoul of the law\, and many leave the program with job training such as nationally-recognized certificates in welding and food service. In Beaufort\, a federal YouthBuild grant and new carpentry workshop provide added skills and hands-on learning. \nEvery year\, Brays Island and its owners donate the golf course practice range tee in which eight 30-by-40-foot croquet courts are groomed to the finest playing conditions for the event\, Williams said. \n“We really consider Brays Island and its residents to be our partners. We couldn’t do this without them\, and it’s such a spectacular setting for croquet\,” said Mike Ingram\, a board member at AMIkids Beaufort\, co-chair of the croquet event\, and Director of Golf at Brays Island. “They make this whole thing possible and we greatly appreciate them.” \nAMIkids also partners with community service projects throughout Beaufort County.  Male teens convicted of crimes can be assigned to AMIkids through the Department of Juvenile Justice. Students work toward their high school equivalency diplomas\, also known as the GED. \nThe May 7 Croquet Picnic will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brays Island off US 17 in Sheldon\, about 15 miles west of Beaufort. A “Captain’s Party” for all participants will be held the evening of May 6 at a waterfront home in Beaufort’s Spanish Point. \nTeams of four to eight people compete in the friendly croquet tournament\, said Dr. Mike Harris\, a board member and co-chair of the AMIkids Beaufort Croquet Picnic. While some experienced teams participate\, most teams are there just for the fun\, friendship and a beautiful day of picnicking at Brays Island\, he said. \n“We have some seriously good croquet players\, but for most of us\, it’s a great day to be outdoors at Brays Island to support a good cause\,” Dr. Harris said. \nFor more information or to sign up a croquet team\, call Dr. Mike Harris at 843-524-3770 or Mike Ingram at 843-846-3149. DESCRIPTION:“A library could show you everything\, if you knew where to look.”—Pat Conroy\, My Reading Life \nThe author of “The Prince of Tides\,” “The Great Santini” and “The Water Is Wide\,” Pat Conroy (1945–2016) is synonymous with the Lowcountry. Pat Conroy Literary Center executive director Jonathan Haupt and intern Alisha Arora will discuss Conroy’s lifelong love of books and libraries—focusing on the roles public libraries\, school libraries\, and Pat’s own personal library played in his writing life. Through video and audio clips\, photographs\, and published and unpublished writings by and about Conroy\, this presentation welcomes attendees into the book-filled world of one of America’s most beloved writers. \nThis program also includes an overview of the Pat Conroy Literary Center which honors and continues Conroy’s legacy as writer and educator in his adopted hometown of Beaufort\, South Carolina. www.patconroyliterarycenter.org \nFree and open to the public\, this special event will be held at the Bluffton Branch Library (120 Palmetto Way) on Tuesday\, May 10\, at 4:30 p.m. \nAbout Our Presenters \nJonathan Haupt is the executive director of the nonprofit Conroy Center and the former director of the University of South Carolina Press\, where he created the Story River Books fiction imprint with Pat Conroy\, named by Garden & Gun magazine as one of “the top ten things to love about the South.” Haupt’s book reviews and author interviews have appeared in the Charleston Post and Courier\, Lowcountry Weekly\, Beaufort Lifestyle\, Savannah Morning News’ Beacon magazine\, Southern Review of Books\, and Southern Writers Magazine’s Suite T blog. He is co-editor of the anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy\, the recipient of seventeen book awards. He serves on the boards of the Friends of South Carolina Libraries and the South Carolina Academy of Authors. In 2020\, Haupt was recognized with the Doug Marlette Literacy Leadership Award presented by the Pulpwood Queens\, the largest book club in the U.S. \nBeaufort County Library volunteer and Beaufort High School senior Alisha Arora is vice president of the BHS chapter of the National Honor Society and a board member of DAYLO: Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization. An accomplished AP and Honors student in numerous STEM courses\, with an emphasis on the biological sciences\, she is the recipient of Academic Excellent Awards. Arora is also a competitive dancer and captain of the BHS Girls Varsity Tennis Team\, and she teaches younger peers in summer tennis camps and at her dance studio.

SUMMARY:The Lowcountry Catboat Rally
DESCRIPTION:The newly created **Lowcountry Catboat Rally** combines the prior Classic Boat Rally with The Lowcountry Catboat Gathering to become a premier event for owners and crews of catboat-rigged sailboats each Spring\, consisting of three days of long distance sailing between Beaufort\, SC\, and Savannah\, GA. followed by two days of racing in the vicinity of Beaufort\, SC. \nThe first event is scheduled for **May 10-15\, 2022**. \nThe long distance portion is restricted to catboats of 16 feet hull length or more and will consist of a cruise from Beaufort to Savannah (42 nm) on Wednesday and races back to Beaufort on Thursday and Friday with an overnight stop on Hilton Head Island. Shorter course racing\, open to all catboats\, will be Saturday and Sunday. \nDue to the necessity for planning dinners and accommodations at three locations\, registrations must be received two weeks prior to the beginning of the event. registration forms\, with the official Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions will be posted on this site and available by email.
