SUMMARY:An Evening with NYT Bestselling Novelist De'Shawn Charles Winslow (A March Forth special event)
DESCRIPTION:As a free event of the Pat Conroy Literary Center’s seventh annual March Forth\, the Conroy Center and NeverMore Books will host an evening with New York Times bestselling novelist De’Shawn Charles Winslow\, author of the newly published Decent People\, in conversation with Jonathan Haupt. Winslow’s debut novel\, In West Mills\, was awarded the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and the Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction. Decent People returns to West Mills with a social justice-themed murder mystery\, which has already been recognized on the recommended reading lists of USA Today\, Good Housekeeping\, the American Booksellers Association’s Indie Next\, and Apple Books. \nFree and open to the public\, this book discussion and signing will be held at NeverMore Books (910 Port Republic St\, Beaufort) on Friday\, March 3\, at 5:00 p.m. Seating is limited; please call 843-812-9460 to reserve in advance. \nABOUT DECENT PEOPLE\nIn the still-segregated town of West Mills\, North Carolina\, in 1976\, Marian\, Marva\, and Lazarus Harmon–three enigmatic siblings–are found shot to death in their home. The people of West Mills are in a frenzy of finger-pointing\, gossip\, and wonder. The crime is the first reported murder in the area in decades\, but the white authorities don’t seem to have any interest in solving the case. \nFortunately\, one person is determined to do more than talk. Miss Josephine Wright has just moved back to West Mills from New York City to retire and marry a childhood sweetheart\, Olympus “Lymp” Seymore. When she discovers that the murder victims are Lymp’s half-siblings\, and that Lymp is one of West Mills’s leading suspects\, she sets out to prove his innocence. But as Jo investigates those who might know the most about the Harmons’ deaths\, she starts to discover more secrets than she’d ever imagined\, and a host of cover-ups–ranging from medical misuse to illicit affairs–that could upend the reputations of many. For readers of American Spy and Bluebird\, Bluebird\, Decent People is a powerful new novel about shame\, race\, money\, and the reckoning required to heal a fractured community. \n“De’Shawn Charles Winslow invites readers on a satisfying ride that\, through his keen observations of human nature\, leads to deeper considerations of the glacial progress of racial equality.”―BookPage\, starred review \n“Winslow chronicles the aftermath of a triple homicide that rocks a segregated Southern community in his dynamic latest . . . There are a trove of surprises along the way to the well-earned resolution\, and Winslow entrances readers with strong characters\, impeccable prose\, and brisk pacing. As a character-driven mystery\, it delivers the goods.”―Publishers Weekly \nDe’Shawn Charles Winslow is the author of In West Mills\, a Center for Fiction First Novel Prize winner\, an American Book Award recipient\, a Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction winner\, and a Los Angeles Times Book Award\, Lambda Literary Award\, and Publishing Triangle Award finalist. His second novel\, Decent People\, was published in January 2023. He was born and raised in Elizabeth City\, North Carolina\, and graduated from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. \nInterviewer Jonathan Haupt is executive director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center\, a judge for the Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction\, and a guest book reviewer for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Charleston Post and Courier. \nMARCH FORTH continues on Saturday\, 3/4\, with a free young readers read-aloud event at the Port Royal Farmers Market and a ticketed day of special events at Penn Center featuring appearances by J. Drew Lanham\, John Lane\, Megan Miranda\, and Marcus Amaker. Learn more and register in advance at https://marchforth2023.eventbrite.com. \nMarch Forth is presented in collaboration between the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center and Penn Center\, NeverMore Books\, the Storybook Shoppe\, the Port Royal Farmers Market\, Catering by Debbi Covington\, and the DAYLO (Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization) chapters of Beaufort High School and Beaufort Academy\, and sponsored in part by a grant from South Carolina Humanities\, a not-for-profit organization inspiring\, engaging and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature\, history\, culture and heritage.

SUMMARY:Free concert with Parris Island Band + US Army Band
DESCRIPTION:The Parris Island Marine Band is hosting a free Combined Arms concert with the 282nd US Army Band next month at downtown’s Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. \nAlways a fantastic show\, the band of super-talented Marine musicians along with their Army counterparts will be performing a selection of classic marches as well as American Favorites from Celine Dion and Kelly Clarkson. \nThe concert is free to the public and will be held on Saturday\, March 11th at 130pm. \nBeaufort is home to lots of great local bands\, and of course one of them is the 108 year old Parris Island Marine Band\, a local favorite at various Beaufort-area events and festivals. \nWhile never\, ever showing its age\, the Parris Island Marine Band was established way back on on October 28\, 1915. Its musicians originally doubled as marksmanship instructors\, close combat instructors and provided support for various units on the depot. \nToday\, the Marines of the Parris Island Marine Band make up the concert band\, the marching/ceremonial band\, brass band\, brass quintet and a jazz combo. \nThe Parris Island Marine Band’s primary mission is to provide musical support for recruit graduations and other military ceremonies and events. In addition to playing at approximately 40 recruit graduations each year\, the band also performs concerts and parades both locally here in the Beaufort area and across the United States. \nIf you’ve never had the pleasure of enjoying a performance by the Parris Island Marine Band\, do yourself a favor and make this the one to see. \nThe addition of the very talented Army Band will only make this concert that much better.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Java: A Gateway to Game Development
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Lunch and Learn workshop series feature different guest speakers and topics spanning all things tech. Sit down with a bite to eat and get comfortable as you listen & learn along with a local tech expert. \nJoin us for a fun and fascinating event featuring Dr. Brian Canada\, Chair of the Department of Computer Science & Mathematics at USCB. On Tuesday\, March 14\, at the Beaufort Digital Corridor\, Brian will take us on an exciting journey exploring the popular programming language Java and the Greenfoot API that helps in teaching proper object-oriented programming in the context of developing 2D games and simulations that can serve as prototypes for games created using professional-grade engines such as Unity\, in which games are scripted using the C# programming language—a very easy language to learn for those who already know Java. \nBrian is a respected educator in the field of computational science and has been involved in several research projects related to the use of games as a mechanism to enable tangential learning about topics in the social sciences and humanities. His presentation will include some of the best examples of games that his USCB students have created over the years\, and he will discuss why game development is a great way to learn Java as a core tech skill\, even for those who never end up developing games professionally. \nIf you are a novice coder looking for a fun excuse to learn object-oriented programming using Java—which remains one of the most popular and in-demand languages for tech workers—or if you are at all interested in game programming in any language\, this event is a must-attend. Brian’s talk will include an interactive hands-on session to explore the Greenfoot API—you are encouraged to bring your laptop\, download Greenfoot\, and follow along! \nSo\, mark your calendars for March 14 and join us for a fun and exciting Lunch & Learn featuring Brian Canada. You won’t want to miss it! \nCost:\n– Donation (pay what you can)\n– Free lunch will be provided (Taco Tuesday – We’ll be having a Moe’s Taco Bar) \nParking:\n– Metered parking in lot\n– Free street parking on Carteret
