SUMMARY:HBF Fall Festival of Houses & Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Historic Beaufort Foundation’s Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens provides a very rare vantage point in a selection of private homes representing three centuries of Beaufort architecture normally not open to the public. The event shows off the Beaufort style. This year’s event is scheduled for October 21st and October 22nd. \nJust as Charleston and Savannah developed a unique individual styles of residential architecture in the early years of the 18th Century\, so did their smaller neighbor located between the two on Port Royal Island in the Old Beaufort District. South Carolina’s second oldest town\, Beaufort founded in 1711\, did not grow as fast as the two larger more urban towns did but was just as strategically settled on a bend in the Beaufort River. \n“The Fall Festival of Houses & Gardens is the best time to experience Beaufort’s extraordinary setting and architecture as gracious property owners open their private homes and exquisite gardens to public view.” said Cynthia Jenkins\, executive director of Historic Beaufort Foundation. “To witness the interiors of these houses and to walk their gardens is truly magical.” \nThe Beaufort style reflects the rural setting of the new town laid out following the natural bends of the river as it wraps around Beaufort’s famous Point Neighborhood. Sometimes referred to by architectural historians as a “plantation style come to town.” Beaufort’s architectural heritage clearly reflects both topographic and climatic conditions with key design elements that ensured more comfort in the sub-tropical climate of the Lowcountry. \nHistoric Beaufort Foundation’s annual Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens offers the unique opportunity to visit inside private houses\, gardens and country estates. The event allows attendees to experience the charm and character of our 18th Century town and explore the architecture and setting of our National Historic Landmark. \nThe festival offers two different tours as well as a luncheon\, on two different days. \nThe Saturday tour will lead visitors through an historic and architectural timeline dating from the 19th century and into the economic recovery of the early 20th Century.  Saturday highlights include the George Moss Stoney House\, built ca. 1823 and remodeled in the 1840s; the Berners Barnwell Sams House\, #1\, ca. 1810; the Joseph Hazel House\, ca. 1815-1820; and First African Baptist Church\, ca. 1861. \nAnother highlight is the John Mark Verdier House\, which underwent a comprehensive exterior renovation in 2021 followed by a rare restoration in 2023 of the Federal Period door surround and entrance. \nTickets for Saturday’s tour are $65 for HBF members and $75 for non-members. The tour is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 21. \nSunday’s tour and Southern brunch will showcase Pick Pocket [Plantation]\, a 15-acre farmstead and former plantation nestled among pecan trees and mature live oaks less than half a mile from one of Beaufort’s busiest intersections. \nThis property\, which was the center of one of the Lowcountry’s earliest truck farming properties\, includes  the impressive ca.1905 farmhouse with wraparound piazzas\, a barn and packing shed now transformed for use as  an event venue  that maintains the property’s rich agricultural character and history. Join us for a rare glimpse at this important phase of Beaufort’s early 20th century economy and way of life. \nTickets to the Sunday event are $130 for members and $150 for non-members of HBF. The Sunday brunch and tour are from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. \nVisit this link to get your tickets\, and to see Beaufort like you haven’t before.

SUMMARY:Barrels and Beer at Shellring Aleworks
DESCRIPTION:Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority (BJWSA) and Beaufort Soil and Water Conservation District (BSWCD) have partnered to present Barrels & Beer\, a rain barrel distribution event hosted by a local brewery in October\, to promote wise water use and sound environmental stewardship. \n“Barrels & Beer is a public engagement and outreach event that we’re thrilled to offer for\nthe first time this year with our wonderful community partner\, Beaufort Soil and Water\nConservation District. We’ll turn event ticket holders into backyard environmental\nstewards by giving them a food-grade barrel and the kit needed to turn that barrel into a\nproper rain barrel\,” said BJWSA Director of Public Affairs Pamela Flasch. \nApproximately 30 percent of an average household’s daily water usage is devoted to\noutdoor uses like landscape irrigation\, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection\nAgency. Homeowners using rain water collected in a barrel for their landscape help\nlessen the demand on BJWSA’s water system for irrigation. \nThe event will be held on Sunday\, Oct. 22 from 2-5 p.m. at Shellring Ale Works\, Port\nRoyal\, and will provide environmental education\, fun activities and guest speakers from\narea organizations\, like BSWCD\, that work to protect and maintain land and water\nresources in the Lowcountry. \n“Barrels & Beer is a great opportunity for the Beaufort Soil and Water Conservation\nDistrict and other groups to educate people on how to care for our natural resources and\nenvironment. The event will give participants a really unique viewpoint of how rain\nwater helps replenish our local water source\, the Savannah River\, and its connection to\nlocally-brewed beer\,” said BSWCD District Manager Leslie Meola. \nBarrels & Beer tickets are $45 and include a barrel\, an adapter kit and one beer from\nShellring Ale Works. The event is open to the public\, but purchasing a ticket will reserve\nyour rain barrel. Proceeds from the event will be given back to the community through\nenvironmental mini grants administered by BSWCD. \nTickets can be purchased through Eventbrite by visiting\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/678075180117.

SUMMARY:Book Launch for Tim Conroy\, Author of No True Route
DESCRIPTION:The nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center is honored to host a free public drop-in launch event for poet Tim Conroy’s second book\, No True Route. Join us on Wednesday\, October 25\, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at 601 Bladen St.\, in downtown Beaufort. No advance registration required. Books will be available for sale and signing. Refreshments will be provided. Conroy will read from his new book of poetry at 5:30 p.m. \nABOUT NO TRUE ROUTE\n“The title of Tim Conroy’s second book\, No True Route\, asks us to think about journeys in both time and space. And\, for sure\, there are poems throughout the book taking up the themes of movement\, direction\, detour\, destination. These are poems by a man looking back over his life—those landscapes of time and family and loss—and thinking about how he got here. What were the signposts? Where could his life have taken another direction? What then? Who would he have been? Not this man\, certainly. Another\, perhaps harder\, or lost\, and not a writer. Don’t we all think about the choices we made or failed to make\, the inheritances we rejected and those we kept\, like a mother’s jar of seashells on a bookshelf\, a slight thing\, a thing weighted with memory\, and inevitabilities? \n“Yet\, I’m struck by a theme of sustenance that threads the book—a mother packing her children’s lunches\, a joke between spouses about a soup of nothing\, coastal meals of crab and shrimp\, a bag of chips that rivets a dog’s attention. Or dreams that will be eaten. Rainwater in chalices. Surely that is another way to think about our lives: the things and people that have sustained us\, fed us\, kept us going. And surely that is another way to think about poetry like this. Something to chew on. Something that can keep us going. Words that sustain.”–Ed Madden\, former Poet Laureate of Columbia\, S.C.\, from the preface \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nAuthor of the collections A Theology of Terrain and No True Route (forthcoming in October)\, Tim Conroy is a poet and former educator. His work has appeared in Fall Lines\, Jasper Magazine\, Marked by the Water\, Sheltered\, Twelve Mile Review\, Poetry on the Comet\, The Post and Courier\, Ukweli: Searching for Healing Truth\, and Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy. In 2022\, he received the Broad River Prize for prose from Fall Lines\, Volume IX. A founding board member of the Pat Conroy Literary Center established in his brother’s honor\, Tim\, and his wife Terrye\, live in Dunedin\, Florida.
