SUMMARY:Volunteer: Oyster Reef Build with SCDNR
DESCRIPTION:Get muddy with us as we volunteer with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Oyster Recycling and Enhancement program (SCDNR SCORE) to restore oyster reefs along the Beaufort River! \nWHAT TO EXPECT:While reef builds are a blast\, they are labor intensive! Expect to get muddy and wet\, be in the sun\, and get some exercise. Volunteers should be capable of and enjoy working in soft pluff mud while lifting and passing up to 40-pound bags of oyster shell and wire cages. \nWe will meet at the Parris Island Boat Ramp (off-base) located at 21 Marina Blvd to sign volunteer waivers\, meet SCDNR’s oyster restoration crew\, learn about the importance of oyster reefs to our coastal environment\, and hear the game plan for the day. Following the briefing\, we will load the material onto the boats and head out to the site for the restoration. \nWHAT TO WEAR/BRING:– Closed-toe shoes. Rainboots/ muck boots are recommended. If you do not have boots\, old sneakers will work. No sandals!– Clothes you don’t mind getting muddy or stained.– Hat– Sunscreen– Reusable water bottle – there will be a water cooler to refill.– I recommend leaving a set of clean clothes in your car to change into after the build \nRegistration required as there is limited space\, and we need an accurate headcount for the boats. \n— \nPlease note\, this is challenging\, but rewarding\, work. If this is not within your wheelhouse\, please check out our other volunteer and event opportunities here! \n— \nShould we need to cancel due to weather\, an email will be sent the evening prior to the event. If registration is full\, please send me an email at rachelh@scccl.org and I will put you on the waitlist. If you need to back out before the event\, please let me know\, so I can fill your spot.

SUMMARY:Write Living Newspapers: A Poetry Workshop Led by Marjory Wentworth
DESCRIPTION:Laurence Ferlinghetti wrote\, “If you would be a poet\, write living newspapers.” In this workshop we will consider the ways the occasion poem is often written to document or provide commentary on an event. Sometimes it is intended to be read or performed publicly\, but not necessarily. There are no specific guidelines for occasion poems\, except that they mark a specific occasion or situation. The poems can be long or short\, serious or humorous\, formal or experimental. We will look at several occasion poems together and consider ways we too can “write living newspapers.” \nThis is an in-person writers workshop\, held at the Pat Conroy Literary Center (601 Bladen St.). Limited to 12 participants with advance registration required; $45/person. \nRegister: https://writelivingnewspapers.eventbrite.com \nAbout Our Instructor: \nMarjory Wentworth is the New York Times bestselling co-author of Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets\, and the author of the prizewinning children’s story Shackles. Celebrated for her significant contributions to literature and social justice\, she served as the poet laureate of South Carolina from 2003–2020. During her tenure as poet laureate\, she published 4 collections of poems and received seven Pushcart Prize nominations. She is also the co-writer with Juan Mendez of Taking a Stand: The Evolution of Human Rights and We Are Charleston: Tragedy and Triumph at Mother Emanuel\, with Herb Frazier and Dr. Bernard Powers\, and co-editor with Kwame Dawes of Seeking: Poetry and Prose inspired by the Art of Jonathan Green. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Holyoke College and a Master of Art in Writing from New York University\, she moved to South Carolina in 1989\, where she taught courses in writing\, social justice\, and banned books at The College of Charleston. For further information about the author visit her website\, marjorywentworth.com.
