SUMMARY:An Evening with Kim Poovey\, Author of Shadows of the Moss
DESCRIPTION:Our nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center will host an evening with Kim Poovey\, author of the historical novel Shadows of the Moss\, in conversation with Jonathan Haupt on Tuesday\, July 12\, at 6:00 p.m. at the Conroy Center (601 Bladen St.). \nThis event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for sale and signing. Seating is limited; please call to reserve your spot: 843-379-7025. The author conversation will also be live-streamed on the Conroy Center Facebook page. \nABOUT SHADOWS OF THE MOSS\n“This captivating saga instantly draws readers into Irish immigrant Maggie McFarland’s quest to find her own self-worth in a new land where men claim others as property. As Maggie’s journey takes her from mid-19th century Ireland to Pennsylvania and south to the Carolina Lowcountry\, she learns that her own trials and gifts offer her a unique perspective on the value of freedom and just what constitutes a real family. Thought-provoking and inspiring!”–Susan Diamond Riley\, author of The Sea Island’s Secret and The Sea Turtle’s Curse \nWith famine raging in Ireland\, Maggie’s father makes the painful decision to send her to stay with family in America. Her excitement quickly fades when her uncle’s hostility and contempt threaten her life\, compelling her to run away. Facing starvation in an unknown country\, Maggie is rescued by a family with a secret of their own. She’s introduced to the Underground Railroad where her faith in humanity is restored. However\, her uncle’s hatred runs deeper than she realized\, forcing her to flee south where she must choose between love and loyalty while struggling with her own internal battles. How long can she hide before her uncle’s relentless pursuits destroy her and those she seeks to help? \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nKim Poovey is an author\, storyteller\, and living historian. She has written several books to include Truer Words\, Through Button Eyes: Memoirs of an Edwardian Teddy Bear\, Dickens’ Mice: The Tails Behind the Tale\, and The Haunting of Monroe Manse. Kim resides in a haunted 1890s Victorian cottage in the South Carolina Lowcountry with her husband\, Darryl\, and their furry children. www.kimpoovey.com \nABOUT THE HOST\nJonathan Haupt is the executive director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center\, the former director of the University of South Carolina Press\, and coeditor of the anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy\, winner of 17 book awards.

SUMMARY:How We Git Gullah by Saundra Renee Smith Reception
DESCRIPTION:Teaching the Meaning of Family\nHow We Git Gullah opens July 6 at Art League Gallery \nSaundra Renee Smith\, local Gullah artist\, captures the essence of being an authentic Gullah/Geechee native of the Lowcountry in How We Git Gullah\, an exhibit at Art League this July. \nSmith’s work is nostalgic\, showing simplistic and innocent scenes of a symbiotic existence with the earth\, guided by the wisdom of the ancients. Inspired by the beauty of her native St. Helena\, Smith’s paintings feature lush\, green fields\, moss-covered oaks\, and rivers “carrying food\, health\, and Gullah folk tales on every tide.” She uses colorful acrylic paints and mixed media on all manner of materials\, including canvas\, board\, glass\, vinyl and tin. \nGullah means “kinfolk.” How We Git Gullah is a tribute to the notion of a cultural family with a homeland ranging down the East Coast from North Carolina to Florida in a swath known as the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Corridor. The exhibit will have short stories of Gullah life interspersed among the artworks. “My aim is to foster communication\, connections\, and a sense of cultural humility\,” says Smith. \nHow We Git Gullah will be on exhibit July 6-August 13\, 2022 at Art League of Hilton Head. An opening reception\, free and open to the public\, will be held Wednesday\, July 6\, 5-7pm.

SUMMARY:July 4th Salute from the Shore
DESCRIPTION:Take part in the 13th annual Salute from the Shore on Monday\, July 4th and participate in the opportunity to salute our armed forces during a military flyover along the entire South Carolina shore in a synchronized salute that will be shared online across the nation and around the world. \nA flyover of vintage planes to salute the armed forces will be over Hunting Island and Fripp Island Beaches sometime around 1:30pm on Monday afternoon. \n\nHead to the South Carolina coast at 1 PM on the 4th of July.\nGo “BIG!” Get a huge flag or get creative. Then GET TO THE BEACH on the 4th of July in all your red\, white and blue!\nRecord your Salute on camera and share it with the world – on Facebook\, YouTube\, Twitter\, Instagram\, a blog\, or any other place you want.\nPhotos of the aircraft are great. Photos of people Saluting aircraft are better.\nTag your Salute images and videos with #SalutefromtheShore\nMake it personal. Whether you love someone serving overseas or remember a fallen hero\, share your tribute. You can do that on this page: http://salutefromtheshore.org/share-your-salute.\n\nThis year’s Salute From the Shore will begin at the North Carolina/South Carolina border\, 40 miles north of Myrtle Beach\, at approximately 1pm and will make its way down the coastline\, where it’ll end in Bluffton. \nThe flyover will begin with two F-16s from Shaw Air Force Base and a C-17 from Charleston Air Force Base. Following the military planes will be a civilian-owned and flown vintage aircraft\, a P51. This plane flies slower than the military planes and will extend the Salute through the afternoon as it makes it’s way down the South Carolina coastline. \nBeachgoers are encouraged to stick around after the initial military planes flyover to be able to see the vintage aircraft. As always\, please be mindful these are older planes with volunteer pilots\, so weather conditions and mechanical issues play a role in how many ultimately fly. \nIt’s always best to arrive early and be patient. \nOn July 4th\, 2010\, the first “Salute from the Shore” was witnessed by hundreds of thousands of people. The inaugural flyover – assisted by a C-17 from Charleston AFB – resulted in an overwhelming outpouring of personal messages\, stories and support from those who participated. Touched by the emotional reaction to the event\, the organization resolved to grow the event into what it is today. \nFor more info\, visit http://salutefromtheshore.org/

SUMMARY:LAURA BURCIN - WOMEN'S EQUITY TAPESTRY SERIES
DESCRIPTION:Eight handwoven tapestries representing Women’s struggle for Equality. \nYou are invited to view a tapestry and visual media show in my gallery at Atelier Off Bay. Each of the eight tapestries was handwoven and represents one of the issues that women are still struggling with to achieve equality with men.\nGender equity has come a long way in the United States\, but each step has taken activism and many years. It took nearly 100 years for women to get the right to vote and many outspoken women and men to achieve it. Many people are worried that we are at a tipping point for losing some of the equity that women have achieved\, case in point potentially overturning Roe v Wade after 50 years.\nI have been weaving tapestry since I retired from the Aerospace industry in 2015\, although before retiring I had been weaving cloth for many years as a hobby. During my career I both witnessed and experienced gender prejudice from the male dominated industry. Now that I am retired\, I am using my tapestry as a visual arts media to illustrate examples of the inequality in the workplace between women and men.
