The Maritime Center will also be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\, and admission is free. \nPresented in partnership between the nonprofit Conroy Center\, the Port Royal Sound Foundation\, the Storybook Shoppe children’s bookstore\, and DAYLO: Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization\, this special event is free and open to the public. \nStudent volunteers from DAYLO will be hosting picture book read-alouds and bookmark art projects throughout the day. SUMMARY:Oyster Reef Build with SCNDR
DESCRIPTION:Get muddy with us as we volunteer with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Oyster Recycling and Enhancement program (SCDNR SCORE) to restore oyster reefs along the Beaufort River. \nShould we need to cancel due to weather\, an email will be sent the evening prior to the event. If registration is full\, please an email to rachelh@scccl.org to be put on the waitlist. If you need to back out before the event\, please let Rachel know\, so she can fill your spot. \nWhat to expect: \nWhile reef builds are a blast\, they are labor intensive! Expect to get muddy and wet\, be in the sun\, and get some exercise. Volunteers should be capable of and enjoy working in soft pluff mud while lifting and passing up to 40-pound bags of oyster shell and wire cages. \nWe will meet at the Parris Island Boat Ramp (off-base) located at 21 Marina Blvd to sign volunteer waivers\, meet SCDNR’s oyster restoration crew\, learn about the importance of oyster reefs to our coastal environment\, and hear the game plan for the day. Following the briefing\, we will load the material onto the boats and head out to the site for the restoration. \nWhat to wear/bring: \n-Closed-toe shoes. Rainboots/ muck boots are recommended. If you do not have boots\, old sneakers will work. DESCRIPTION:Author Donna Baier Stein said that writers can use photography to “expand… meaning—not in terms of enlarging [an] original work\, but in terms of offering more possibilities.” In this workshop\, we use a combination of professional and amateur photography\, including our own family photos\, in conversation with poems and short prose to generate creative new work. We’ll use the unconscious subtexts of these photos\, the befores and afters\, and the memories they evoke. We’ll also take a look at the objective properties of the photographs\, including composition and the objects within them to inspire us. The workshop will include 4 prompts\, so come to this class ready to write. What creative possibilities are lying in wait in these photographs? Sign up and find out!
