SUMMARY:FI Audubon Club April Program - “North on the Wing”
DESCRIPTION:The passage of spring in North America\, with the blossoming of wildflowers\, chorusing of frogs\, leafing-out of forest canopies\, and the migration of neotropical songbirds\, constitutes the Hemisphere’s most wondrous annual event. \nIn 2015\, Dr. Beehler followed spring migration from the coast of Texas and Louisiana\, up the Mississippi valley\, and into the vast boreal forests of northern Canada. He drove more than 13\,000 miles\, camped out in a tent 100 consecutive nights\, and immersed himself in the sweep of spring up through America’s Heartland. \nThe purpose of this field expedition was to obtain first-hand knowledge on the state of spring in the year 2015—68 years after Edwin Way Teale conducted a similar field trip\, which he described in his best-selling book North on the Wing.. \nAlthough Dr. Beehler is a professional ornithologist and conservationist\, this journey was not a scientific exercise. Instead\, he acted as a naturalist and reporter\, focusing on songbirds\, nature\, environmental history\, and American culture. The objective was to tell a unique story of little-known natural environments\, dedicated local naturalists\, their innovative projects\, and their strategically-placed field stations. These critical components make up the front line in the ongoing campaign to study and conserve migratory birds\, their critical habitats\, and the phenomenon of neotropical migration in a world undergoing rapid change. \nDr. Beehler’s presentation includes a selection of the more than 5\,000 digital images he took featuring birds and nature. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/405869175514679/

SUMMARY:Beaufort Human Library
DESCRIPTION:Check Out the Fourth Edition of the Beaufort Human Library\, April 7 \n“Where oral history meets speed dating.” The Beaufort Human Library project promotes empathy and understanding across communities by offering the public opportunities to “check out” more than a dozen volunteer Human Books who will be sharing their personal stories of facing challenges and striving for acceptance. These engaging conversations will cover topics including education\, military service\, healthcare\, gender\, race\, faith\, immigration\, addiction\, abuse\, and widowhood\, among others. The dialogues focus on building bridges of understanding\, person to person\, through storytelling. \nThe fourth edition of the Beaufort Human Library will be held on opening day of National Library Week: Sunday\, April 7\, from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. in MacLean Hall\, building 12 of the Technical College of the Lowcountry (TCL)\, at 104 Reynolds Street in Beaufort. Free and open to the public\, the event is hosted by TCL; the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center; DAYLO: Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization; and volunteer community organizers. \nThe afternoon begins at 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. with this year’s featured Human Book\, Karen Gareis\, a U.S. Navy veteran turned high school librarian who was recently featured in a 60 Minutes news story on education censorship. Following that featured conversation\, all of the volunteer Human Books will be available throughout MacLean Hall to be checked out for 30-minute small group conversations from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Attendees (the “Readers”) may choose to participate in a new conversation every half-hour throughout the afternoon. Advance registration is not requires\, nor are attendees required to stay for the whole afternoon. Check out just one Human Book\, or six\, or any number in between. Volunteer Librarians and student Bookmarks from DAYLO will be on hand to help guests navigate their Beaufort Human Library experience and answer questions. \nThis year’s Human Books include community members Xzorion Berry\, Isabella Troy Brazoban\, Cesar Clavijo\, Ana Delvalle\, Paulette Edwards\, Catherine Forester\, Ashley Gardner\, Karen Gareis\, Col. SUMMARY:Oyster Reef Build with SCDNR
DESCRIPTION:Get muddy with us as we volunteer with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Oyster Recycling and Enhancement program (SCDNR SCORE) to restore oyster reefs along the Beaufort River. \nShould we need to cancel due to weather\, an email will be sent the evening prior to the event. If registration is full\, please send an email to rachelh@scccl.org and she will put you on the waitlist. If you need to back out before the event\, please let Rachel know\, so she can fill your spot. \nWhat to expect: \nWhile reef builds are a blast\, they are labor intensive! Expect to get muddy and wet\, be in the sun\, and get some exercise. Volunteers should be capable of and enjoy working in soft pluff mud while lifting and passing up to 40-pound bags of oyster shell and wire cages. \nWe will meet at the Parris Island Boat Ramp (off-base) located at 21 Marina Blvd to sign volunteer waivers\, meet SCDNR’s oyster restoration crew\, learn about the importance of oyster reefs to our coastal environment\, and hear the game plan for the day. Following the briefing\, we will load the material onto the boats and head out to the site for the restoration. \nWhat to wear/bring \nClosed-toe shoes. Rainboots/ muck boots are recommended. If you do not have boots\, old sneakers will work. No sandals!\nClothes you don’t mind getting muddy or stained.\nHat\nSunscreen\nReusable water bottle – there will be a water cooler to refill.\nWe recommend leaving a set of clean clothes in your car to change into after the build. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/393160983473731/
