Two locally owned Beaufort businesses were selected among the ‘Best Shops in South Carolina’ by Southern Living Magazine.

Every year, the popular magazine publishes a bevy of various ‘best of’ lists that include best town, best city, best restaurant, etc., and Beaufort is no stranger to them, always managing to show up on a list one way or another.

We’re very happy to see that both Scout Southern Market and MacDonald MarketPlace were selected and named among the best shops in the Palmetto State.

“Every Southern woman has a favorite shop or department store or boutique that she can’t live without,” Southern Living has said.

“Whether big city or small town, there are so many incredible spots to shop.”

Who are they?

Scout Southern Market in downtown Beaufort has been turning heads and satisfying the sweet tooth of locals and visitors since it opened back in the summer of 2014. The well known local Bay Street spot offers specialty decor, foods and more, all from the South, and they also have a popular Sweet Tea Bar that offers sweet tea floats that are always a welcome treat on our hot Lowcountry days.

MacDonald MarketPlace in Frogmore on St. Helena Island is also a family affair. The building was built as the first general store in 1877 by James Ross Macdonald and five generations later, is owned and operated by members of the same St. Helena Island family. Opened in 2016, the shop unites local artisans in one collective space and offers a variety of Lowcountry-inspired cultural creations, and products and other goodies from the Sanders family’s popular tomato farm.

Other shops in S.C. that made the Southern Living list? Among others: Charleston Gardens in Charleston, Equine Divine in Aiken and Brackish, also in Charleston.
