The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines Zen as: a state of calm attentiveness in which one’s actions are guided by intuition rather than by conscious effort, and Zen Buddhism strives for awakening, or enlightenment about the true nature of the things around us. Both are essential for managing bottomland hardwood forests, where things are not always as they appear, and the systems that created what we see today may no longer be functioning. Bottomland hardwood forests require us to slow down, look at the site and solve backwards for how it developed before we can begin to move forward.
