There’s nothing like horseback riding along the beach and visiting Hunting Island in the winter months means coming across lots of beautiful horses enjoying their long walks.
Horseback riding in South Carolina State Parks, especially at Hunting Island, is a longtime favorite activity and is enjoyed by horse owners of all ages and riding groups of all sizes.
At Hunting Island State Park, you and your horse will find over four miles of coastal beach with breathtaking views, soft sand and ocean breezes. Riding at Hunting Island Beach is available December, January and February, each year. According to Friends of Hunting Island, a permit is required, and there are guidelines, rules and regulations that must be followed.
The riding season is from December 1st through the last day of February.
The permits are purchased at the Hunting Island Visitor Center.
Parking is at South Beach and riding is permitted only on the beach.
Enjoying the beach at low tide allows the maximum space on the beach to ride.
Riding on the Hunting Island nature trails is not permitted.
