The South Carolina Department of Transportation has announced the award of the Interstate 95 Widening and Improvements Project. This project, in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Transportation, will widen and improve I-95 from the Savannah River to US 278, or 10 miles.
The purpose of the project is to accommodate for growth and to improve the interchanges and bridges to fit modern standards. This will include the addition of a new bridge over the Savannah River. The goal of the project is to reduce traffic delays and congestion and keep people and goods moving smoothly and safely through the I-95 corridor.
It’s about time interstate 95 is widening; in fact, it’s about 30 years overdue.
SCDOT expects to host a groundbreaking ceremony later this summer. The anticipated completion date for the massive project is around 2030.
Northbound interstate 95 has been a huge problem over the years and the Interstate 95 widening project is far overdue. The much traveled interstate is 3 lanes in Georgia, but bottlenecks as travelers approach the South Carolina state line causing a parking lot more often than not, even when there isn’t an accident.
SCDOT Commission Chairman TJ Johnson said, “SCDOT has been working to get this project off the ground and we are excited to take our first step to begin breaking ground on improving this vital corridor of our state’s interstate system.”
Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said, “I-95 at the Georgia border has long been a choke point for traffic heading between New York and Miami. The award of SCDOT’s largest contract ever begins a new day to fix the drive on I-95 for residents and visitors alike. Our team will continue to work to advance this project and build a safe and efficient roadway through our great state.
The total project cost is estimated to be $825 million with a construction cost of $728.8 million with funding from SCDOT’s Federal Interstate funds, State Rural Interstate funds and the Georgia Department of Transportation.
