The City of Beaufort is showing off a lot of its patriotic pride this week. The Woods Memorial Bridge in downtown is showcasing a salute to our nation this Fourth of July holiday with an enormous flag hanging from it…a first for South Carolina.
People coming and going in and out of Beaufort will enjoy a surprise if they take the Woods Memorial Bridge.
Not only is the flag patriotic and symbolic….it’s actually historic that it’s there in the first place.
The state of South Carolina has never allowed a U.S. Flag to be hung from any bridge. Now, Beaufort can be very proud to hold that honor of being the very first one.
State Representative Shannon Erickson was able to get the concept approved by the state, and has now been brought to life for drivers and boaters and for folks who are enjoying the beautiful downtown Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park.
It’s no surprise that earlier this summer, Beaufort was also recognized as being the most patriotic city in all of South Carolina.
The City of Beaufort Fire Department helped others install the flag this week. The flag hangs at 15 wide by 25 feet long, which is about 5 times larger than the average size flag used in many homes.
It’s scheduled to stay on the bridge through the holiday weekend, so be sure to keep an eye out if you’re driving along the river, enjoying the park, or if you’re anywhere in the downtown Beaufort area.
