Runners can get excited that LowCountry Habitat for Humanity has announced they’re moving forward with the 3rd Annual Turkey Trot 5K in downtown Beaufort at 8am on Thanksgiving morning.

Sponsored by First Federal Bank, the event will be held on Thursday, November 26th at 8am and features a professionally timed race on a USATF certified course. Participants will enjoy a run through Historic downtown Beaufort on Bay Street starting at Freedom Mall, crossing the Woods Memorial Bridge with a turn on Meridian Road before doubling back along the same route. Strollers  and leashed pets are welcome. You may even register your pet online for no cost when you signup.

The 2020 event will have some notable changes including the request to wear a face covering at the starting line for the race, a larger area for the starting line to allow for additional social distancing, and they will not be hosting an awards ceremony at the event.

Lowcountry Habitat’s plan is to minimize contact surrounding the event, not allowing race day registration or packet pick-up at the event.  Although they will not be presented at the event, awards will be given to first place 5K race finishers in eight age group categories and first, second and third overall.  The awards may be picked up at Grounded Running on Friday and Saturday following the event.

With precautions in mind for the health of our community, volunteers, staff and participants, the participation for the in-person race is limited to 250 participants to adhere to social distancing guidelines. There is also a virtual registration option so those that don’t feel comfortable with coming out may also participate and contribute to Lowcountry Habitat’s mission to end substandard housing in Beaufort.

“This event has quickly become a Beaufort Thanksgiving tradition and we are thrilled to be able to continue this fun, family friendly event in a limited format,” Executive Director, Jimmy Boozer said. “LowCountry Habitat takes the threat of the COVID-19 virus seriously and we are doing our best to insure a safe and fun event for the Beaufort community to enjoy on Thanksgiving.”

Early registration is only $30 with discounts available for active duty military and groups of 4-10 people.  Registration fee includes a long sleeve adult t-shirt while available.
