If you’ve ever held on to that old American flag for awhile because you didn’t know what to do with it, now your problem of proper retirement is solved.
The Beaufort County Public Works Annex has installed a U.S. flag retirement box at the building at 23 Shelter Church Road in Beaufort.
The flag retirement box is possible through a partnership with the National Association of Counties, the National Flag Foundation and Beaufort County Council and is of no cost to the County.
In addition, local members of Boy Scouts of America will be responsible for the disposal and burning of the worn flags.
Proper flag retirement etiquette requires American flags should be folded respectfully before being placed in the box.
The United States Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8k states-“The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
“We are pleased to have this flag retirement box available to all residents of Beaufort County,” said Eric Greenway, Interim County Administrator.
“May is Military Appreciation Month with Armed Forces Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, and of course, Memorial Day. As we honor and reflect on the sacrifice of our military, it is a privilege to offer a way to respectfully retire our American flag.”
