Park rangers at Hunting Island State Park finished up installing a wheelchair accessible entrance to the beach on Tuesday afternoon.
Located on north beach at the end of the sidewalk at the Lighthouse, the access will help visitors with mobility issues, and will also make life easier for visitors with wagons and beach carts.
Folks have been asking for these to be installed for a very long time, as we have seen over the years on social media.
And, from what we’ve seen, folks are glad to have it. We posted the above photo on our Facebook page around dinner time on Tuesday, and everybody applauded the addition. See for yourself…
“It is for wheelchairs and wagons full of beach gear,” said Park Ranger Carl Berube on Facebook. “It is NOT for golf carts. Carts are not allowed in that area anyway.”
If you use that entrance for access to the beach, Berube also advised that you should cover your feet first. “If you are walking over it, I suggest flip flops at least. It’s not soft and fluffy on bare feet,” he said.
There is no information at this time from hunting Island about any more wheelchair ramps being added to any of the other beach access points on either north or south beaches.
A big thank you to the staff at Hunting Island State Park for making it simpler now, for everyone, to have easier access our beautiful beach.
