Recently, the Travel Channel named Beaufort’s Highway 21 Drive-In one of the top drive in theaters in the U.S. coming in at an impressive #2.
The network says our local Beaufort open-air movie haven has the feel good vibe of days gone by. “Located just outside the popular resort community of Beaufort, South Carolina, the Highway 21 Drive-in has the feel-good vibe of another era and offers up double features on two screens showcasing the most current Hollywood hits.”
“The snack bar is totally old school with such specialties as corn dogs, burgers, funnel cakes and root beer floats. Glo bracelets and necklaces and collectible flash pops are also available for the kids.”
That means the Highway 21 Drive In absolutely nails it.
Having a local drive in right here in town is something we treasure because there aren’t too many of them still in business these days across America.
In the 1950s, outdoor movie venues were at the height of their popularity with 4,000+ screens across the U.S. with most of them in small, rural towns. Their popularity began to decline in the Seventies as America’s movie habits changed.
It’s estimated that less than 400 drive ins remain.
Here are a few of the top drive-ins across America that are enjoying a resurgence of popularity, according to the Travel Channel’s article.
