The Beaufort Walmart Store at 350 Robert Smalls Parkway is currently closed after it suffered a small grease fire in the deli area this afternoon.

According to a press release by authorities, arriving crews with the City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Department and the Burton Fire District found the store evacuating and that employees had deployed portable fire extinguishers keeping the fire in check.

The firefighters were able to fully extinguish the fire with additional extinguishers within minutes of arrival.  Damage was limited to the fryers in the deli area but the store did have smoke and extinguishing agent throughout that needed to be removed.

The Walmart store at 350 Robert Smalls Parkway was closed as a result and is still closed at this time.

Walmart is evaluating the extent of the damage from the smoke and fire extinguisher agent before re-opening and no timeline was readily available as of the issue of the press release by the City of Beaufort.

There were not injuries to report and the cause is under investigation by the City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Marshal’s office.
