The weekend is coming and there’s lots of fun things to do all around the Beaufort, SC area with some awesome community events going on as well. With the arrival of fall, things are getting pretty fun as the Lowcountry cools down a bit, and there’s plenty going on this weekend, too.

The weather looks like it might decide to be cooperative for a beautiful weekend, with highs in the low 80s/upper 70s, and lows reaching into the 50s at night, with barely any chance of rain coming our way.

With decent weather, get out and explore the outdoors a bit. Hunting Island Beach might just be the thing you need this weekend, and it’s unlikely the kids will complain. Or, you could explore some of our local historic spots, there sure are enough of them. This is Beaufort SC, after all.

Walk the sacred grounds of the Sheldon Church, explore Fort Fremont and the semi-secret beach at Lands End, pay a visit to the Cypress Wetlands in Port Royal and marvel at the diverse nature here in the Lowcountry.

Take the kids to a local pumpkin patch. Holiday Farms is open for the season and there’s tons of fall fun to be found there, and the annual pumpkin patch at downtown’s Carteret Street UMC is open as well.

The Beaufort Shrimp Festival celebrates Lowcountry cuisine and incorporates lots of fun activities for all ages. The first weekend of October always brings concerts, competitive events and several local eateries will fill Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park offering samples of Lowcountry dishes featuring local wild-caught shrimp.

One of Beaufort’s most popular festivals, the Shrimp Festival excitement kicks off at 5pm on Friday, and includes live music along with activities and an Arts & Crafts Market. The Shrimp Festival continues on Saturday with the popular Run Forrest Run 5K race starting at 8am, followed by live music throughout the day, children’s activities, the Arts & Crafts Market…and lots and lots and lots of SHRIMP!

You can also start your Saturday off with a visit to the Port Royal Farmers Market at the Naval Heritage Park in Port Royal. It runs from 9am to 12pm and you’ll find a fantastic selection of local produce, seafood, homemade cheeses & breads, honey and lots of other goodies.

On Saturday, one of Beaufort’s most popular fall events returns from 10am until 3pm. If you want to help make a difference in our community, the Port Royal Sound Foundation is hosting an Adopt A Highway Litter Pick Up in Okatie on Saturday morning. It’s helpful in keeping our slice of the Lowcountry clean, and it’s some good exercise too.

If you find yourself on the south end of Beaufort County, don’t worry, the annual Lowcountry Fish & Grits Music Festival on Hilton Head Island will give you plenty to do. The festival celebrates the vibrant Gullah Geechee culture and its ties to the African diaspora. Through a showcase of talented musicians and that amazing local Gullah cuisine, the festival highlights the rich heritage and traditions of the Gullah Geechee people. Enjoy music, food, childrens’ activities, a Gullah craft market and lots more at Lowcountry Celebration Park on Pope Avenue.Around Town: Things to do this weekend in Beaufort, SC

On Sunday, go eat some oysters. The annual Gullah Oyster Roast is happening on St. Helena Island from 5 to 8pm. Sponsored by Bill Green and the Gullah Grub, the evening offers an abundance of local oysters, chili, live music, a kids play zone, a silent auction and more. You’ll find the event at 12 Georges Trail on the Island…and be sure to arrive hungry.
