Well, Beaufort, SC has just done it again. Coming on the heels of last week’s accolades which named Beaufort the Most Charming Town in South Carolina, we were also just named the Coolest Small Town in the Palmetto State as well, this time by the popular travel website Far & Wide.
In selecting its America’s Coolest Towns in Every State for 2024 in a February 12 article, the website said that “big cities like New York and Los Angeles may get most of the attention, but America is filled with small towns and communities that have long formed the backbone of the nation. These towns are filled with their own history, museums and cultural attractions, but also come with the added appeal of home-spun charm and hometown heroes.”
“While millions spend big dollars to pack themselves like lemmings into big-city attractions, America’s wonderful small towns offer a carefree getaway at a fraction of the cost.”
In picking Beaufort out of all the other 394 towns with an official name in the state and putting it on its just-published Coolest Small Towns list, Far & Wide said Beaufort is “not-to-be-missed,” and that’s as good a description as any.
Far & Wide said, “While many travelers are familiar with the welcoming Hilton Head Island, just across the way is Port Royal Island, home to Beaufort.”
“Each of the coastal Sea Islands of South Carolina are inviting, but Beaufort’s downtown district filled with historic and imposing antebellum mansions along palm tree-lined streets make it not-to-be-missed.”
And, it’s not the first time someone thought we were “cool.” In 2021, it was the popular website Buzzfeed who named Beaufort among the coolest spots in the entire country.
It’s no wonder why Beaufort is practically bursting at the seams with visitors almost all year round. It’s accolades like these that help to keep people coming back again and again.
We’ve also recently been named one of the 25 Best Small Towns in America by Architectural Digest; the Most Charming Small Town in South Carolina; one of the Cutest Towns in the U.S. and the Most Quaint Town in South Carolina.
In addition to those, Southern Living magazine named the Old Sheldon Church ruins one of the South’s Most Beautiful Chapels; named Hunting Island State Park one of the Best State Parks in the South; and named downtown Beaufort’s Craven Street one of the South’s Most Beautiful Streets.
