Beaufort did it again and this time it was USA Today’s readers who named Beaufort to the list of the Ten Best Coastal Small Towns in America, in an article just published last weekend.
We couldn’t agree more.
”Forget about Miami and Los Angeles! These 10 small towns – each with a population of fewer than 25,000 people – were selected by our readers as the 10 Best Coastal Small Towns. Each offers uncrowded, unpretentious, and affordable seaside fun in small packages that prove bigger isn’t always better,” USA Today said.
When it came to Beaufort the article said, “Beaufort is more than a hidden Lowcountry South Carolina jewel – it’s a life-changing destination that has enchanted visitors since 1512.”
“Enjoy the winding, historic streets with their moss-draped live oak trees, or learn about sea life on an educational boat tour of the Checheessee River. For the more adventurous, kayak tours offer paddling opportunities and perhaps even a chance for dolphin sighting!”
Coming in at #9 on the list, one spot ahead of Cape May, New Jersey, Beaufort enjoyed being in some good company. Bucksport, ME took the top spot, Georgetown, SC came in at #2 and Nags Head, NC and Del Mar, CA are on the list as well.

The accolades have been pouring in for Beaufort recently.
We’ve also recently been named one of the 25 Best Small Towns in America by Architectural Digest; the Most Charming Small Town in South Carolina; one of the Cutest Towns in the U.S. and the Most Quaint Town in South Carolina.
In addition to those, Southern Living magazine named the Old Sheldon Church ruins one of the South’s Most Beautiful Chapels; named Hunting Island State Park one of the Best State Parks in the South; and named downtown Beaufort’s Craven Street one of the South’s Most Beautiful Streets. Also, we’re both the Healthiest County in South Carolina and the Most Patriotic, too.
We’re grateful for the USA Today readers who thought enough of Beaufort to vote for her. With much bias, we all know that Beaufort deserves to be among the best towns…if not the best.
