Beaufort named one of top destinations to enjoy incredible oysters

Beaufort has been named to numerous lists over the years covering everything from charm to beauty, beaches to festivals, and so much more. And, now its been named one of the top 6 Southern Coastal Destinations to Visit for Incredible Oysters, by the folks at Southern Living magazine.

“Across the South, you’ll find everything from the buttery oysters along the Gulf Coast to the briny varieties in South Carolina,” Southern Living said.

“As you make your way from region to region, you’ll start to appreciate the nuances in their taste, texture, and size. And you’ll quickly realize that the storytelling and the generations of oystermen that have worked these waters are just as important as the delicacy itself.”

“If briny oysters are your preference, head on down to Beaufort, SC. Along the Port Royal Sound in Beaufort, you’ll find nearly half of the oysters in South Carolina,” SL said. (and we didn’t know that!)

“This region is known for its high tides and high salinity, and that leads to perfectly salty oysters. The region is also known for its commitment to wild-harvested oysters. Farmers wait until low tide, then walk along the oyster beds, plucking them by hand. Farms like Lady’s Island Oyster Company and Braden Oyster Farm are two of those known for their traditional farming methods, which also benefit the local ecosystem.”

And, you can’t talk about Beaufort without mentioning a festival.

“Time your visit [to Beaufort] right, and you’ll get to stop by the Beaufort Oyster Festival, an annual event that brings in thousands of oyster fans to this charming seaside town every January.”

Our oysters are special. Just as special as the hard working folks who go out and get them for us.

Lately, Beaufort has been named the Prettiest Town in South Carolina; one of the Most Welcoming Towns in the U.S.; one of the South’s Best Small Towns; and one of the Most Beautiful Small Towns in America; and lots more. See all of the recent kudos here.
