More kudos are coming our way as Southern Living Magazine has just named beautiful Beaufort SC the #2 Best Small Town in the South on it’s 2023 list of The 50 Best Best Small Towns in the South.
Southern Living said that this year’s selections “may be small (some are technically villages) but each one has its own distinct story to tell.”
The magazine had good things to say about Beaufort SC. “Wild beauty and Lowcountry allure abound in this South Carolina gem. Get lost among the pines and palmettos of an ancient maritime forest, catch a striking sunset over the Beaufort River, and marvel at the columns and sweeping porches of stately mansions.”
Southern Living has also previously warned visitors that they’ll come to Beaufort SC for the scenery….but they’ll end up looking at real estate by the end of the day.
Who was #1? Well, the #1 small town in the south according to Southern Living is St. Augustine, Florida.

Southern Living has been heaping praises all over the Lowcountry as of late. Hilton Head was recently named the 2nd Best Beach Town in the South AHEAD of Key West and Myrtle Beach and our neighbors in Bluffton were in the Top 10 on this year’s Best Small Town list coming in at #16.
The only other town in South Carolina to make the list other than the 3 above, is Georgetown, which came in at #41
Closer to home recently, Beaufort was named the Friendliest Town in America by travel website TheTravel.com, and one of the Most Beautiful Towns in America by Conde Nast Traveler.
Southern Living has also recently named the Old Sheldon Church ruins one of the South’s most beautiful chapels; named Hunting Island State Park one of the best state parks in the South; and named downtown Beaufort’s Craven Street one of the South’s most beautiful streets.
