The City of Beaufort is showing off a lot of its patriotic pride this week. The Woods Memorial Bridge in downtown is showcasing a salute to our nation this Fourth of July holiday with an enormous flag hanging from it; something that it’s been doing for the past several of years.
People coming and going in and out of Beaufort will enjoy a surprise if they take the Woods Memorial Bridge.
Not only is the flag patriotic and symbolic….it’s actually historic that it’s there in the first place.
The state of South Carolina has never allowed a U.S. Flag to be hung from any bridge. Originally getting the go ahead in 2019 over the 4th of July holiday, and each year since, and yet again this year, Beaufort can be very proud to hold that honor of being the very first one.
In 2019, State Representative Shannon Erickson was able to get the concept approved by the state, and now drivers and boaters as well as folks who are enjoying the beautiful downtown Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park will be able to see it.
City employees and others helped install the Woods Bridge flag on Wednesday. It’s scheduled to stay on the bridge through the holiday, so be sure to keep an eye out if you’re driving along the river, enjoying the park, or if you’re anywhere in the downtown Beaufort area.
We love that our town does these things. It’s just another reason why Beaufort SC is a great place to visit, and to call home.
