According to the City of Beaufort, residents of Beaufort may notice work being done on two projects next week; one of which is a noticeable project along Boundary Street.
Demolition of the vacant Wendy’s building on Boundary Street along Battery Creek will begin next week. This will continue the development of Battery Saxton Park, the passive park along Battery Creek and Boundary Street that greets visitors to Beaufort and offers beautiful views of the marshes.
The park was named after a Union Army gun battery established at that site in 1862 during the Civil War.
The planned park is one of the final phases of the $30 million Boundary Street Corridor Improvement Plan. The improvement project was designed and implemented starting in 2016 to give visitors traveling into town along Boundary Street a more aesthetically pleasing gateway; as well as to provide better commercial and retail locations, and improve traffic conditions.
In addition to the Wendy’s, other buildings were already removed to make way for the scenic park. The former United Way building, which is now being used temporarily by the county, and the old Sea Eagle Market building and a Huddle House restaurant which were already removed.
The Wendy’s location has been closed awhile and has since moved to a new spot on a lot at the intersection of Boundary Street and Neil Road, near the Burger King and McDonalds.
Also next week, dredging will begin on a creek that leads from Arthur Horne Park to Basin 2 in the Mossy Oaks neighborhood. The creek has a slight hump in it that has prevented drainage of water after heavy rains, and has led to some flooding in the Southside Park area.
