Beaufort’s C.J. Cummings set three new Junior Word Records on Thursday while participating in the Junior Pan Am Championships in Havana, Cuba.
This kid just keeps going and going and going. It’s as if the Energizer Bunny met the Incredible Hulk.
According to a report from USA Weightlifting, the 19-year-old weightlifter from Beaufort set new marks again on Thursday, much like he did this past April at the senior Pan Am Championships.
C.J. set 15 new 73kg records at the Championships. His 154 kg. in snatch, 193 kg. in clean & jerk and total of 347 kg. were all junior and senior Pan Am records, and also a new junior world record as well as the new junior and senior American records.
“It’s a good thing record books are digital now because you couldn’t print them fast enough to keep CJ Cummings’ records up to date,” USA Weightlifting said.
The snatch was good enough for a silver medal, while C.J. won gold in the clean & jerk and in total.
C.J. is in a dominant stretch of success, USA Weightlifting says, having earlier this month become the first weightlifter of any country, man or woman, to win four junior world titles in a row with his triumph in Fiji.
Cummings is currently the top-ranked weightlifter in the world, and as such is in prime position to qualify for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
The Junior Pan Ams are a top event for Olympic qualifying and they carry the maximum amount of weight, further bolstering C.J.’s chances of making the U.S. Olympic Team.
We can’t wait to see C.J. in the Olympics next year.
And, neither can Beaufort!
