The Chocolate Tree has cancelled its annual All You Can Eat Night, for the first time in 36 years. The popular local Beaufort chocolate maker made the announcement to its customers on Facebook on Friday afternoon; the event falling victim to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The popular chocolate lover’s night has been around every year, without fail, since around 1984.
Back then, the owner of The Chocolate Tree, Pat Green, was faced with the August Lowcountry heat and an air conditioning system in need of repair. So, like all smart community-oriented business owners do, Mrs. Green found out a way to get rid of a good bit of the chocolates at the store so they wouldn’t melt. She sold one-price tickets for one night of indulgence and the community responded.
Then the event became history and turned into a Beaufort tradition with a packed house full of chocolate-lovers circling the date on their calendars each year.
Had it not been cancelled, the 2020 installment of All You Can Eat Night at the Chocolate Tree would have been its 36th, and was to be scheduled for mid-late August.
We’re going to miss it this year, but we’ll be sure to make up for it with a few extra trips to the Carteret Street store to get some fantastic homemade chocolate.
