Airmen from the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Savannah saved two lives after a canoe capsized in Port Royal Sound between St. Helena Island and Hilton Head Island on Friday.

According to the report from U.S. Coast Guard Station Savannah, “the MH-65D arrived on scene and located the two individuals clinging to their capsized canoe in high winds and rough seas.”

The report noted that both survivors, a father and his young son, were wearing life vests which largely contributed to their survival.

“The survivors were wearing appropriate life vests, which largely contributed to their survival in cold water temperatures. The aircrew acted quickly, decisively and worked as a cohesive team to hoist the survivors from their capsized canoe in the center of Port Royal Sound.”

Both survivors were flown to Hilton Head Airport where EMS was on standby.

See video of their rescue below.

This is the first rescue since Airmen from the station rescued 4 kayakers who were stranded off of Tybee Island in early March and the first Coast Guard rescue in Port Royal Sound in some time.
