Coastal Living names Hunting Island a 'secret spot to visit'

Hunting Island Beach and State Park was the only location in South Carolina that made the list of “50 Secret Places to Visit Now” by Coastal Living Magazine.

Kind of sweet, isn’t it?

And, it’s in some really amazing company too. The list included some seriously cool places including Australia, Greece, Tasmania, the Bahamas, Fiji and even Brazil.

With more than a million visitors each year to our tiny island paradise, “this beloved wild place lures Lowcountry day-trippers who gape at the windswept marvel of it all,” the CL artice said.

The article also mentions “the charming town of Beaufort,” and points out Hunting Island’s “one darling, just-rustic-enough cabin that can be booked (far in advance).”

Hunting Island used to be lined with cabins on “cabin row”, but that has all changed in the past 30 years due to the effects of beach erosion.

Still, there’s one left.

Currently, Hunting Island is the happy recipient of a major beach restoration project that just finished up a couple of months ago, after being severely beaten up by Hurricanes Matthew and Irma in 2016 & 2017.

And with the restoration project, the beach is bigger than it’s been in a very, very long time.

In recent years, Hunting Island has been listed as one of the top 15 beaches in the United States and one of the “Best State Parks in the South” by Southern Living Magazine and was mentioned in Coastal Living’s “14 Secret Places in America to Visit Now.”
