Women’s Saltwater Fishing Clinic (Beaufort County): Fishing as Mental Therapy

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many studies have found that fishing allows you to disconnect from the demands of daily life, chemotherapy, and reconnect with nature. The only thing you need to focus on is casting that line, and maybe, just maybe, the tug of a fish on the other end.

SCDNR has partnered with the Beaufort Memorial Hospital and Gay Fish Company to host an event that allows breast cancer patients, survivors, and women in general to learn about fishing as a coping mechanism. This educational event will teach you the basics of saltwater fishing–and the best part? You’ll get to try out your newly learned skills by fishing off the dock at Gay Fish Company. All fishing supplies and bait will be provided. This is a catch-and-release program so no fish will be kept. Beaufort Memorial Hospital staff will provide educational outreach and materials, talk about navigating the breast cancer journey, and why women’s health is incredibly important. Gay Fish Company will be providing light appetizers and support for this event. Please register through the Eventbrite link as space is limited.
