Everybody knows that Beaufort’s sea islands are the best and USA Today wants to be sure that absolutely everybody knows that Fripp Island is near the top of the list; so much that the popular media outlet has put the gorgeous 3.5 mile island at the very end of U.S. Highway 21 on a short list of Best Islands in the U.S. for a Fun Filled Escape.

“Located at the southern tip of South Carolina, Fripp Island is just 3,000 acres and is best known for explorers and pirates seeking treasure,” USA Today said in its August 8, 2023 article giving Fripp the #3 slot of all the islands on its list.

“Because of its remoteness, it exudes a kind of laidback charm you can only find on the best island vacations in the U.S., but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot for families to do here.”

“Fripp Island has family-friendly amenities along with special packages for those traveling with kids. Kids can partake in Camp Fripp, which offers educational and creative workshops that include painting, tie-dye, and learning about area wildlife. There’s a swim-in movie night along with live entertainment throughout the week. If you want to get on the water, book a kayaking tour or a pontoon cruise. The world-class golf course is great for active adults looking to get some swings in, while weekly activities for adults, kids, and families keep non-golfers busy.”

Being on a list like this is a BIG deal. Not just because it’s USA Today, but because of the company that Fripp Island is keeping among the other 6 islands chosen by the media outlet.

Fripp is right up there with Whidbey Island, WA, Amelia Island, FL, Mackinac Island, MI, and Maui, HI.

That’s some pretty impressive company.

Fripp Island gets lots of kudos. Recently, it was also named one of the Best Islands In America by Southern Living, one of the Best Beaches to Avoid Large Crowds by Livability, and its Ocean Point Golf Course is listed as the 5th Best Golf Course in South Carolina by Golf Pass.

A few hundred years removed from its history of marauding pirates, Fripp is a wonderful spot to take a family trip any time of the year. With its beautiful beaches, creeks and maritime forest, it’s a spot that many want to spend time enjoying. Including the year round residents of the island, thousands live on island time in over 1,500 homes & villas at the height of the summer vacation season, and the island’s popularity runs very high.

Another part of the appeal of Fripp is the abundance of nature on the island.

Fripp is home to beautiful tropical foliage, a thriving population of gators, friendly deer, sea turtles, and home to over 175 different bird species.

In fact, Fripp Island holds the distinction of being both a National Wildlife Federation Certified Community Wildlife Habitat and also an Audubon Important Area. It was only the 68th spot in the country to earn the distinction from the NWF.
