The Highway 21 Drive In has been under new ownership for the past 5 weeks, and its new owner isn’t wasting any time in making changes to the much beloved spot. The new Lowcountry Flea Market will be opening on Saturday, July 9th, and this is going to be a huge year-round weekend affair. The flea market will be open from 9am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays all year long.
Jake Higgins took over the drive in on June 1st and immediately started making some changes. A third movie screen has been added and the flea market idea has been placed front and center, with the drive in now doubling as an open air flea market that makes for a great family weekend outing.
“The goal is to give our Beaufort and Jasper County residents a fixed place to sell, swap goods, buy items and produce, make some money, create lasting memories and enjoy their community,” Higgins said.
Interest has been huge since the announcement was made a couple of weeks ago.
“We’ve had over 2,000 inquiries about spaces, and we’re loaded with over 130 spaces already committed for the opening weekend,” he added.
Beaufort could use a big, open air flea market, and what better choice than the well manicured and well appointed grounds of our local drive in?
All the food you like to enjoy when you go to the drive in will be available for shoppers & sellers as the drive in’s concession stand will also be open for the flea market.
Lots of drive ins across the U.S. offer weekend open air flea markets, too. With rising costs of showing the movies in the evenings, many owners have turned to the flea market concept to help generate additional revenue for the theaters. Back in the 1950’s at their peak, there were over 4,000 drive-in theaters operating in the United States. Currently, there are about 330 Drive-in Movie Theaters still in operation, nationwide, many with flea markets and other events on site.
