Beaufort’s Highway 21 Drive In was again named on a list of the best in the country.
First it was the Travel Channel bestowing the #2 spot on our local family favorite venue. This time around it was WideOpenCountry.com, a popular web magazine dedicated to country music and the country lifestyle.
In celebrating our nation’s pastime of outdoor movie watching, the website recently put together a list of the 30 Best Drive In Theaters in America, and our beloved drive in came in at #14
“The United States is full of amazing drive-in movie theaters that let you check out your favorite films on some seriously big screens in an outdoor setting,” Wide Open Country said. “Those of you that haven’t gotten to experience a drive-in are seriously missing out.”
We couldn’t agree more.
Just like the Travel Channel did, WOC touted the theater’s concession stand in the article. “This old-fashioned theater has a concessions menu full of all roadside favorites to enjoy while you watch films from your car,” it said.
Seems like the food is something special there.

Having a local drive in right here in town is something we treasure because there aren’t too many of them still in business these days across America.
In the 1950s, outdoor movie venues were at the height of their popularity with 4,000+ screens across the U.S. with most of them in small, rural towns. Their popularity began to decline in the Seventies as America’s movie habits changed.
It’s estimated that less than 400 drive ins remain.
Congratulations to the theater, and to its owners the Barth family, for their recognition and we also thank them for keeping a part of Americana alive right here in Beaufort SC.
