After being closed since 2019, Historic Fort Fremont Preserve on St. Helena Island has reopened to visitors. The new Interpretive Center is not yet completed, but the grounds of the fort have been spruced up and new paved walking paths and a picnic pavilion have been installed.
Fort Fremont is a Spanish-American War coastal defense artifact built in 1898 to defend the Port Royal Sound. The site and its historical ruins, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, were acquired in 2004 by Beaufort County Council into the County’s Rural and Critical Lands Program.
Fort Fremont Preserve closed for improvements on May 15, 2019. It reopened on May 28, 2021 to little fanfare.
When it’s completed, the new Interpretive Center will house many artifacts and display items representing the Fort’s history. For more info, visit Friends of Fort Fremont on Facebook.
