Hundreds hit the water in the annual Pelican Plunge

Hundreds of New Year’s Day celebrants of all ages took the annual Pelican Plunge and hit the water on Wednesday at Hunting Island State Park. Water temperatures hovered in the upper 50s with a pleasant 62° afternoon on land….so it wasn’t all that bad.

Some participants ran in and immediately ran back out of the water… while some went in for a second dip.

Among the costumes for the annual costume parade were a a few Grinches, a sea anemone, a crab, some birds and lots of clowns.

The afternoon’s Pelican Plunge festivities also included calypso music, campfires, hot cocoa.…and a whole lot of fun.

The Pelican Plunge benefits beach and trail maintenance and the conservation and support of the wildlife at the State Park and is sponsored by the fine folks at Friends of Hunting Island.
