Hundreds hit the water in the annual Pelican Plunge

Hundreds of New Year’s Day celebrants of all ages took the Pelican Plunge and hit the water on Tuesday at Hunting Island State Park. Water temperatures hovered in the upper 50s with a very warm 75° afternoon on land….so it wasn’t so bad.

Some participants ran in and immediately ran back out of the water… while some went in for a second dip.

Among the costumes for the annual costume parade were a a sea anemone, a crab, some birds and lots of clowns.

The afternoon’s festivities also included calypso music, campfires.…and a whole lot of fun.

The popular event benefits beach and trail maintenance and the conservation and support of the wildlife at the State Park and is sponsored by the fine folks at Friends of Hunting Island.
