The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism has recently announced that repairs will be made to the Hunting Island fishing pier starting next month.
Still damaged from Hurricane Matthew in 2016, the pier, which is a favorite of both locals and visitors, has been closed to fishing for about 4 1/2 years.
The S.C. State Parks website posted an advisory to warn folks of upcoming construction.
“Beginning May 2021, construction will begin on the Fishing Pier at the Nature Center and is scheduled to continue throughout the following months,” the announcement said.
“During this time, there may be temporary closures, congesting traffic, equipment and periods of construction noise.”
A popular fishing spot that lets visitors to Hunting Island cast their fishing and crabbing lines into Fripp Inlet, the pier has been virtually untouched since Hurricane Matthew paid a visit to Beaufort and the sea islands and left lots of damage in its wake.
When it comes to storms, past few years haven’t been kind to South Carolina’s most visited state park. In addition to Hurricane Matthew, the park also suffered flooding and other extensive damage from both hurricanes Irma and Dorian.
The repair and reopening of the famed fishing pier will be welcome, and it will also bring closer the return of the amenities that everyone is used to enjoying at our beloved Hunting Island.
