The annual Sand Sculpture Contest at Hunting Island State Park is back and is scheduled to hit north beach under the shadow of the lighthouse on Saturday, June 1st.

Individuals, teams and families can enter and only natural materials found around the beach and park may be used in your creations. It’s all-natural art created on an all-natural beach. In recent years, the contest, organized by volunteers from Friends of Hunting Island State Park, has produced wondrous sand models including sea turtles, castles, alligators, houses, mermaids, sand mannequins and even giant peanuts.

Your days at the beach with a bucket and shovel making castles in the sand were child’s play compared to what you’ll see at this sand sculpting event.

The day of fun in the sun and sand kicks off at the lighthouse with registration at 1030am and as always, there is no fee to participate, other than the park entrance fee.

Judging starts around 1pm and prizes in various categories will be awarded starting at 130pm. Categories include

Sand Fleas: Up to 10 years old (with an adult leader)
Sand Hoppers: Ages 11 through 17
Sand Tribes: Families and teams

And, anybody can be a judge in the People’s Choice balloting. For a $1 donation per each vote to the Hunting Island Sea Turtle Conservation Project, you can cast your votes for your favorite design.

Visitors can also enjoy food and refreshments, music and other fun, family-style activities.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Friends of Hunting Island’s Sea Turtle Conservation Project.
